Position Overview:
The Managing Director of Programs will have primaryresponsibility for the high quality execution of and fidelity to the New Leaders program model in their assigned city focused on reaching local goals that result in high levels of academic achievement for all students in New Leader-led schools. The primary work of this role will be to execute New Leaders' programs in the supported partner cities and charter organizations, and to provide meaningful feedback to New Leaders' central teams on program design and delivery.
Through building and leading a strong team of key employees, and in deep partnership with City leadership and various content experts, this position will execute a result-focused program model in support of district and charter partners. Team leadership will be a central component of this role, including facilitating objective setting and overall performance management in agreement with the City Executive Director, providing staff professional development support, and ensuring project planning for all programs.
The Managing Director of Programs will be a highly influential leader in driving student achievement through a strong understanding of school leadership, by creating adult learning experiences and utilizing deep and authentic feedback, and by building a highly capable team of facilitators who demonstrate similar skills. This position will also directly deliver key program components, as well as oversee other individuals who implement programmatic workstreams.
This position will report directly to the City Executive Director and will be matrixed to a national program team Executive Director. Reporting to this position will be local staff responsible for program delivery in various program areas.
Specific accountabilities include:
- Leading and managing staff responsible for carrying out the New Leaders program model including the following programmatic components:
- The Emerging Leaders Program—serving targeted numbers of teacher leaders and assistant principals in the assigned city to create an internal principal pipeline with two primary goals – to ensure valuable leadership training to all participants and ready participants for New Leaders' Aspiring Principals Program;
- The Aspiring Principals Program— ensuring the success of New Leaders Residents during their Residency training year through coaching support and by integrating skills taught in our Foundations courses into practice by the Residents; working with Residents and their mentor principals to support their personal and professional development; and assessing and evaluating Residents for readiness to become a high performing principal.
- The Principal Institute—serving a targeted number of early tenure New Leader principals and school leaders in the assigned city by creating a network of support for leaders to utilize their collective experiences and expertise to foster continued school improvement to drive dramatic student achievement gains.
- Coaching the performance of program team members and building a high-performing program team which models and carries out a staff culture that reflects a relentless focus on student achievement, high-quality program delivery, operational efficiency and excellence;
- Providing ongoing input and feedback on program design and implementation to National program teams, tracking program data and holding fast to national guidelines and processes;
- Actively supporting the City Executive Director in district and partner engagement, meeting with principal managers to discuss New Leaders' program and the progress of program participants;
- Working closely with the City Executive Director to develop and support targeted strategies to build a sense of cohesiveness among the local community of New Leaders Residents and principals;
- Assisting, as needed, in the annual evaluation needs of the New Leaders program; reviewing data to track progress toward goals and make local program improvements;
- In partnership with the City Executive Director, responsible for the hiring, development, performance management and ongoing support for program staff;
- Working closely with the Executive Director on program execution needs to be met by other staff members including program manager and/or program associate; and,
- Providing program expertise to the City Executive Director in meetings with district and other external partners as needed, and liaising with such external partners on program needs in close coordination with the City ED.
Skills, Experiences & Competencies
- Belief that every student, in every circumstance, can achieve the highest levels of academic excellence.
- A minimum of two years of experience as a principal or head of school required
- A minimum of seven years of program or school-based management experience strongly preferred.
- Passionate commitment to improving public education and the value of leadership in our nation's public schools.
- A strong track record of leading teams to achieve ambitious results.
- Strong people management skills and the ability to motivate, excite, inspire, and educate both internal and external resources; proven ability to improve the practice of adults through coaching and feedback.
- Experience in K-12 education, including a strong familiarity with the challenges faced by principals in urban public school districts; experience as a principal highly desired.
- Expert knowledge and expertise in adult professional development and leadership; ability to design and deliver high quality professional development experiences.
- Strong facilitation and influencing skills; excellent relationship management skills.
- Strong recruitment, placement and onboarding skills and experiences.
- Ability to execute a national program with fidelity and credibility, while adapting a program to a local context and needs.
- Ability to plan and execute, and to solve problems creatively and effectively.
- Exceptional communication skills (oral and written), including strong ability to communicate program components and needs to partners.
- Exceptional organizational skills, with an ability to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously and thrive in a fast-paced environment.
