Posted on: April 26, 2013

Posted by: Members Assistance Program (MAP)

Description

Opportunity to work directly with a US District Court Appointed Special Master on a major project to end discrimination in three unions, and gain experience in a law firm setting.

The Member's Assistance Program was created as part of several court imposed remedies to locate and retain qualified Black and Latino members into formerly all-White construction unions. The MAP office is located within Raff & Becker, LLP, a small Manhattan law firm concentrating in civil rights, labor, employment and anti-discrimination law. David Raff is the managing partner and a US District Court Appointed Special Master who administers remedial programs, including a job referral system.

Position requires some evening work utilizing a computerized referral system approved by the court to refer skilled union construction workers to jobs in a fair and equitable manner.

During the day, your job-referral Operator tasks might include analyzing trends from reports prepared by the system, job placement follow-up, and other phone interaction with union workers and contractors.

The rest of your day would include working with attorneys in a support position which would entail proofreading, billing and other paralegal tasks, such as data entry and analysis, report writing, attorney intake calls, photocopying, scanning, software support, filing, and on occasion, researching cases.

The right candidate will have at least a 4 year college degree and exhibit the following:

  • superior interpersonal and verbal communication skills, including patience, good humor, and diplomacy
  • ability to work with a diverse population
  • excellent writing skills
  • ability to multitask and prioritize effectively
  • self-motivation
  • detail-oriented and responsible independent thinking
  • advanced experience with Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel and databases
  • analytical training or experience – good with numbers and statistical data
