Communications Director

  • Brooklyn, NY, US

To apply, please send cover letter, resume, and references to Rachel Goodman, Chief-of-Staff, rgoodman@council.nyc.gov.

New York City Council Member Brad Lander is seeking a Communications Director to oversee and implement the Councilmember's communications and media program – in order to serve the people of the 39th District, to resist the threats of the Trump regime to American democratic values and vulnerable constituencies, and to build a more just, inclusive, and sustainable NYC.

Who We Are:

Brad Lander is NYC Council Member for the 39th District (Brooklyn), and the Council's Deputy Leader for Policy. Brad is a leader on issues of affordable housing, economic justice, protecting the environment, combating discrimination, good government, and strengthening livable neighborhoods through community engagement. In the Council, Lander has successfully championed bills to reform the NYPD, combat school segregation, protect freelancers from getting stiffed, reduce plastic bag waste, make our streets safer, promote sustainable transportation, protect NYC's campaign finance system from dark money, and insure a fair work week for fast food workers. Our team helped bring participatory budgeting to NYC, organized a broad community response after Hurricane Sandy, and launched the "Bridging Gowanus" process to insure community involvement in critical planning and land-use decisions.

In addition to providing first-rate representation for the 39th District, our office seeks to be part of a broader movement for social justice. Brad is co-founder of the Council's Progressive Caucus and currently chairs its political arm. He is the incoming board chair of Local Progress, a national network of progressive local elected officials. We recently launched #GetOrganizedBK and are working with partners in our community and far beyond to resist the injustice, hatred, and corruption posed by the Trump regime. We work hard to build a team of smart, diverse, hard-working, committed, creative staff, in a supportive and collaborative environment, to achieve our goals.

Responsibilities of the Communications Director include:

We are seeking a Communications Director to oversee and implement the Councilmember's communications and media program.

1) Craft and implement the Council Member's communications strategy (in close consultation with the Council Member and Chief-of-Staff), setting goals and strategies for all areas of our communications work (to align with the broader goals of the office). Work with other staff, interns, volunteers, and partners to implement these strategies.

2) Manage the office's online communications work, including:

Draft and send regular blast e-mails.
Oversee and update our contacts database (in Nationbuilder).
Manage and post content to the Council Member's web-site.
Work with the CM on Twitter, Facebook, and social networking.
Organize online campaigns and actions.

3) Manage the office's press work, including:

Develop strong working relationship with reporters and editors.
Place stories and identify other communications opportunities that advance the goals of the Council Member, locally, city-wide and nationally.
Identify local communications opportunities that reflect the work of the district office.
Plan press conferences, draft and distribute press releases and statements, and follow up with media for most effective coverage.
Work with the Council Member to draft and place Op-Eds.
Respond to incoming press requests and quote requests as need.

4) Draft content for bi-annual print newsletters.

5) Monitor relevant citywide and local media, list-serves, blogs, and community bulletin boards on relevant issues and prepare responses as needed.

6) Manage community outreach communications for all office events (including participatory budgeting, Bridging Gowanus, #GetOrganizedBK, and other events).

7) Work with staff of other City Council Members, allies and advocacy organizations (both in NYC and beyond, in conjunction with Local Progress) to coordinate effective communications strategies that advance progressive policy goals.

What We're Looking For:

-- Smart, hard-working individual committed to advancing justice, opportunity, and sustainable neighborhoods in NYC
-- Minimum 3-4 years of communications experience (ideally in New York City)
-- Very strong writer
-- Experience with news media, social media, communications campaign planning strongly preferred
-- Experience managing a large online contacts database
-- Demonstrated ability to adapt to and leverage an ever-changing media landscape
-- Strong news sense and knowledge of the media
-- Ability to handle multiple projects at once, and to work on deadline in a fast-paced environment
-- Attention to detail
-- Team player with good ability to help coordinate and work in coalitions
-- A sense of humor (it is surely needed in this business)

What We Offer in Return:

-- Competitive salary
-- Generous benefit and leave policies
-- Great opportunity to make NYC a more just, fair, vibrant, inclusive, and sustainable place
-- The chance to work with a highly visible, mission-driven office and a great team of colleagues
-- A supportive work environment, with attention to professional development and opportunities for growth

We aim to build a diverse staff team of individuals committed to our goals. We are an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer. Women, people-of-color, and people with disabilities are strongly encouraged to apply.
