Job description

The Development and Events Manager, California will be responsible for managing and supporting fundraising in Northern California and other regional states with an emphasis on culinary events including Taste of the Nation and No Kid Hungry dinners. The position is responsible for driving the development and implementation of a strong fundraising strategy with a focus on developing local leadership and relationships of volunteers, chefs and culinary professionals, local corporate sponsors, and major donors. All actions are taken within the context of the No Kid Hungry campaign to end childhood hunger in America.

  • High-level and detailed management of a portfolio of events, volunteers, and donors to support Share Our Strength's Taste of the Nation, Share Our Strength's No Kid Hungry dinners, the No Kid Hungry strategy and other fundraising platforms throughout the country, which represent prominent fundraising and awareness-building opportunities for the organization.
    • Plan and execute Taste of the Nation events. Taste of the Nation events are large-scale tasting events that involve a volunteer committee; local, regional and national sponsors; and the culinary community.
    • Plan and execute No Kid Hungry seated dinners. No Kid Hungry dinners featuring local chef talent and drawing upon attendees in the local area.

General Event Responsibilities:

  • Develop event budgets, work plans, and strategies.
  • Conceive strategy for and carry out all aspects of event execution as necessary, including but not limited to: robust sponsorship packages, effective marketing & ticket sales strategies, well-curated silent and live auctions, recruitment of top new & perennial favorite restaurants and chefs.
  • Strengthen and develop existing and new relationships in event markets with:
    • Restaurants and Culinary Professionals: Chefs, Mixologists, Sommeliers, and restaurant management
    • National and local corporate sponsors
    • In-kind donors
    • Vendors
    • Auction donors
    • Major donors
    • Event attendees
  • Strategic growth of events: assess event opportunities to maximize fundraising and awareness-building
  • Work in tandem with the Major Donor team and No Kid Hungry Campaign Field Managers to identify and develop leaders for select events.
  • Taste of the Nation:
    • Manage local volunteer Taste of the Nation committee to ensure growth and longevity of the Taste of the Nation program, and cultivate opportunities for new events and new, high-profile donors.
    • Oversee activities of local volunteer committee and provide them with guidance and direction to meet fundraising goal by increasing revenue and maintaining or reducing expenses.
    • Create and implement succession plan for volunteer committee.
    • Use proper Share Our Strength branding and messaging in all promotional materials.
    • Communicate Share Our Strength mission, policies and procedures to volunteer leaders.
    • Inspire and motivate volunteer leaders.
    • Keep track and regularly update event, restaurant and volunteer leaders' information.
  • Chef relations:
    • Work with National Director to develop work and communication plan for year-round engagement of culinary professionals.
    • Assist and/or directly manage chef and community leader asks for fundraising events.
    • Provide structure and plan for growing participating chefs into longtime supporters; execute plan and cultivate relationships.
  • Provide administrative oversight as required.
  • Consult and assist as necessary with headquarters best practices for volunteers, chefs, and staff processes.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Skills:

  • Bachelor's degree in marketing, communications, community development, public service or a related field.
  • 5 years event and individual fundraising experience in fast moving environments.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Self-starter, ability to work under minimal supervision.
  • Comfortable working from a home office.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills required.
  • Ability to work well with multiple and diverse groups of people.
  • Ability to work at a fast pace with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Ability to handle multiple activities, events and projects simultaneously.
  • Short and long-range planning and follow-through skills.
  • Volunteer management experience.
  • Detail-oriented.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends.
  • Proficient computer skills, including the operation of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Raiser's Edge, Outlook.
  • Knowledge of the culinary community a plus.
  • Have valid driver's license.
  • Frequent travel required (up to 20% in the western region).
  • This position is based out of a home office.
