Mission

The Colorado Consumer Health Initiative (CCHI) is a member-based nonprofit nonpartisan 501(c)3 advocacy organization dedicated to ensuring barrier-free access to quality affordable health care for all Coloradans. We bring together a unified statewide voice for reform by engaging, educating, and empowering consumers and advocacy organizations to improve the healthcare system.

Position Description

The Director of Strategic Engagement will develop and guide CCHI's overall strategy for communications and internal/external relations, including online presence, messaging, marketing, media and membership. The Director of Strategic Engagement will work to position CCHI as the primary source, disseminator, and conduit of information on health reform advocacy for our diverse members, partners, and constituent base.

The Director of Strategic Engagement is part of CCHI's management team and works closely with the rest of the staff on a variety of strategic initiatives, and will lead implementation of CCHI's work. This position reports to the Executive Director and will supervise the Membership Coordinator, contract media/communications support and the Strategic Engagement Fellow.

Primary Responsibilities

Communications & Messaging

  • Develop and implement all strategic communications supporting CCHI's efforts to advocate for accessible health care including the development and execution of multi-year communications plans for the organization and for specific campaigns.
  • Manage the development, implementation and consistency of social media campaigns, website content, email campaigns and blog.
  • Manage the development, distribution and maintenance of all print collateral including, but not limited to, newsletters, brochures, annual report and policy letters.
  • Put communications vehicles in place to create momentum and awareness, as well as to evaluate the effectiveness of communications activities.
  • Serve as primary liaison on messaging and communications to other state advocacy groups and national organizations work on these issues.
  • Coordinate communications, messaging, and engagement strategies with other management team members and all CCHI programs.
  • Manage press relations and media consultant.

Membership

  • Manage and lead the Membership Coordinator.
  • Oversee execution of membership activities, including annual renewal, communications and periodic meetings.
  • Manage communications and engagement strategies for membership and CCHI's broader constituency as part of our participation in Public Will-Building initiative of The Colorado Trust.

Management

  • Support policy and advocacy staff by helping organize testimony, public input and activities that support CCHI's advocacy efforts.
  • Track, monitor and evaluate all activities for effectiveness and conformance with organizational goals and strategies as well as grant reporting.
  • Staff CCHI board committees as assigned.
  • Manage Salsa database, using it to effectively reach constituents and track their participation.
  • Manage Strategic Engagement fellow and story banking efforts.

Qualifications

The preferred candidate will have demonstrated skills and experience in the following areas:

  • Substantial communications experience, including "in-house" leadership role within a nonprofit organization with a diverse membership.
  • Experience with member relations; ability to develop strategies that move members further on the engagement continuum.
  • Demonstrated experience with website content, social media, newsletters, action alerts including WYSIWYG website and email experience (examples: Salsa, Wordpress, Drupal)
  • Thorough understanding of social media tools.
  • Thorough understanding of the communications role in nonprofit advocacy, lobbying, legislative and policy activities.
  • Energetic, mature leadership with the ability to serve as a unifying force and to position communications and engagement discussions at both the strategic and tactical levels.
  • Collaborative style and commitment to work closely with all constituent groups including board, staff, members, partners, volunteers and other supporters.
  • Strong record of positioning an organization to achieve tangible outcomes.
  • Enjoy creating and implementing new initiatives; ability to work independently.
  • Flexible and unflappable in a fast-paced office that is often driven by external timelines.

Compensation and Benefits

The Director of Strategic Engagement is a fulltime, exempt position that reports to the Executive Director. Salary range is $50,000 - $60,000 depending on qualifications and experience. CCHI provides full benefits (health, dental, disability) and a competitive leave package.
