The Asian Pacific American Legal Center (APALC), a member of the Asian American Center for Advancing Justice, is the nation's largest Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) legal and civil rights organization and serves more than 15,000 individuals and organizations every year. Founded in 1983, APALC's mission is to advocate for civil rights, provide legal services and education, and build coalitions to positively influence and impact Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders and to create a more equitable and harmonious society. Through direct legal services, impact litigation, policy analysis and advocacy, leadership development and capacity building, APALC seeks to serve the most vulnerable members of the AANHPI community while also building a strong AANHPI voice for civil rights and social justice.

Position Summary: The legal assistant will provide administrative support to the Immigration and Citizenship Project (ICP) staff. A major component of ICP's work is in the area of citizenship. APALC is an anchor agency in a national effort to encourage and assist eligible legal permanent residents to become U.S. citizens with a specific focus on Asian American and NHPI communities. The legal assistant will provide direct assistance to citizenship applicants, including application completion and processing, as well as provide administrative support for grant data collection and management. The legal assistant will also be expected to provide support in citizenship outreach and education efforts. Other administrative support may be required for other non-citizenship, immigration-related work. The legal assistant will work directly with ICP staff and under the supervision of the ICP supervising attorney.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Provide administrative support to citizenship application workshops in California, including, but not limited to, setting up workshops, providing application assistance, preparing materials, and following up with individual clients;
  • Provide direct assistance to prospective citizenship applicants through application completion and processing;
  • Provide case management and administrative support as assigned;
  • Assist APALC staff attorneys with application review and follow up;
  • Provide staffing at APALC's in-house bi-monthly citizenship workshops and at community-based clinics throughout Los Angeles and OrangeCounty;
  • Provide general office administrative support for the unit including, but not limited to, filing and copying;

Qualifications:

  • Excellent organizational skills, detailed and task oriented;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, and experience working with immigrant or limited English clients;
  • Bilingual in at least one Asian language;
  • Excellent computer and word processing skills;
  • Ability to work independently under general supervision;
  • Strong interpersonal skills;
  • Availability for local travel around Southern California;
  • Ability to work some nights and weekends;
  • Valid driver's license, liability insurance, and access to transportation, and
  • Knowledge of and commitment to immigrant communities, with citizenship application (N-400) experience.

Salary details
Compensation: $15.00-17.00/hour, depending on experience, plus bilingual supplement. A generous benefit package includes paid medical, dental, vision insurance, and retirement with parking provided.
