Job Summary:
The Senior Director of Executive Communications will serve as primary writer for the ASPCA's executive team and within Media & Communications. In collaboration with the department SVP, this position will help develop executive communications strategy and will conceive of, draft and edit internal and external communications for senior executives in both traditional and social media. The position also will help oversee internal communications for the organization and assist in the writing and editing of other M&C communications, as necessary.
Job Responsibilities:
- Work closely with leadership team to develop and implement external communications strategy and help draft communications for experts on social media.
- Draft and edit speeches, public remarks and talking points for senior executives for internal and external communications
- Oversee speaking opportunities and speaker's bureau for executives
- Draft and edit newspaper, online and blog columns
- Draft, edit, copy-edit ASPCA's written communications, such as biographies, backgrounders
- Oversee and manage internal communications staff including intranet
- Oversee, along with M+C and HR, as appropriate, internal communications for the CEO and senior executives.
- Oversee ASPCA's press kit and organizational press materials
- Draft and edit Op Eds and Letters to the Editor, as necessary
- Work closely with senior members of the Media & Communications team to develop editorial concepts for senior executives
- Draft and / or edit crisis communications materials, as necessary
- Edit press releases and other communications, as necessary
Education:
- Minimum of a B.A. or B.S.
Experience:
- Five-10 years experience writing for media outlets AND five-10 years experience conceiving, drafting, writing and editing communications including executive speeches, Op/Eds, press releases, and internal memos for senior executives within corporate or non-profit sector
- An accomplished writer with extensive experience writing for accredited media outlets
- Experience writing for social media (Twitter, blogs, Facebook, etc.)
- Experienced researcher and news writer
- Published writing samples required
Knowledge Requirements:
- Strong understanding of traditional news, social media and business of media
- Ability to conduct basic research online and with other resources
- Ability to follow and report on animal welfare trends and current events reported in the media
- Ability to maintain good working relationship with the senior executives, public, employees, and department staff
- General understanding of animal welfare and ASPCA's mission
- Knowledge of and experience with IBM-compatible computers, word processing software, and other office equipment
- Working knowledge of MS Office Suites, including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Adobe Acrobat, and social media platforms
- Ability and willingness to work flexible hours, if required
