Position: Development Associate/ Grant Writer
Supervisor: Assistant Director for Foundation and Government Support
Overview: University Settlement, serving over 25,000 low-income individuals and families each year with innovative programming, and its affiliate agency, The Door, New York City's leading youth development agency, providing comprehensive services to over 11,000 young people each year, seek a Development Associate. The Development Associate is a part of the Development Department's Institutional Giving team and is responsible for a portfolio of approximately 30 foundation funders and government contracts of various magnitudes for an assigned set of programs across University Settlement and The Door.
Responsibilities: • Write letters of inquiry, proposals, government Requests For Proposals (RFPs), renewal requests, and interim and final reports to private foundation and government funders. • Prepare and package complete proposal and report packages for private foundation and government RFP applications, including all attachments and standard forms. • Conduct appropriate research needed for various letters of inquiry, proposals and reports. • Facilitate the completion of government contract packages, coordinating with the Assistant Director for Foundation and Government Support, program directors, and finance officers, • Manage the proposal and report deadlines for a set of programs areas at University Settlement and The Door by maintaining and updating the agencies' grant calendars and action sheets, in partnership with the Assistant Director for Foundation and Government Support. • Coordinate the successful completion of multiple proposal and report deadlines of various magnitudes in partnership with the Assistant Director for Foundation and Government Support, program directors, senior management, and finance officers. • Assist the Assistant Director for Foundation and Government Support with maintaining communications and relationships with foundation and government program officers. • Maintain accurate donor records and files -- both electronic and paper -- for University Settlement and The Door. • Contribute to the gap-closing process and program expansion efforts for assigned program areas by helping to develop the approach, offering judgment about directions, and identifying new sources of support through intensive prospect research for new private foundation funders and the review of government RFP opportunities. • Retain up-to-date knowledge about assigned programs and program developments, and broker effective working relationships with program directors and finance officers. • Help to integrate the Institutional Giving effort into the overall Development strategy, in partnership with the Assistant Director for Foundation and Government Support, by presenting and sharing relevant information, outcomes and research with colleagues. • Assist with special events and complete other relevant tasks as assigned by supervisor.
Qualifications: • Minimum Bachelor's degree from accredited institution and at least two years of grant writing experience required • Superior writing and communication skills, with emphasis on proposal writing • Excellent time management skills and ability to manage multiple projects and effectively set priorities • Demonstrated ability to manage a robust portfolio of funders and demonstrated success securing funding of all types, including upgraded funding and new funders • Excellent critical thinking skills as related to creating coherent logic models for funding proposals, analyzing and synthesizing program design from program colleagues, and integrating the nuances of funders' particular interests in advancing a body of work into our approach • Excellent computer skills including data base, word processing • Ability to work efficiently in a deadline-driven environment • Knowledge of foundation and funding worlds (in related, non-profit fields a plus) • Excellent donor relations skills • Ability to work independently and as an effective member of a team • Ability to work with and relate to board members, foundation/government contacts, and program directors • Must be available for occasional evening events
Salary: High $30's, depending on relevant experience, plus generous benefits package Hours: 35 hours per week
