About Super Stars Literacy and AmeriCorps:
AmeriCorps is a national service program, similar to the Peace Corps, that places volunteers in areas of need in the United States. Super Stars Literacy (SSL) is a nonprofit organization that works to build literacy skills and improve academic achievement for children in the Bay Area in Kindergarten-2nd grade. Our organization hosts AmeriCorps members who lead SSL's after school programs in urban East Bay Area elementary schools.
PositionDescription:
The Volunteer Coordinator AmeriCorps Member will be responsible for all aspects of volunteer recruitment and retention to expand the number of students and families served by Super Stars Literacy programs; increase community support for Super Stars Literacy; enhance and enrich existing Super Stars Literacy programs; and create opportunities for youth and adults to positively impact the lives of students in their communities. The Volunteer Coordinator will recruit and train volunteers to assist in after school literacy programs for Kindergarten-2nd grade in the East Bay. The Volunteer Coordinator will also recruit volunteers to assist in special events such as field trips, family reading nights, and other events.
The Super Stars Literacy Volunteer Coordinator is a full time AmeriCorps placement. A typical work week for a Member in this position is Monday-Friday 9:00am-6:00pm. The ideal candidate is a dynamic individual who has the ability to manage multiple tasks and responsibilities, work with a diverse volunteer pool and Super Stars Literacy staff, and assist in maintaining the integrity and structure of a strong volunteer program. This candidate must be committed to supporting the Super Stars Literacy mission of giving every child the foundation for lifelong learning and achievement.

Qualifications:
Training: Training Director and Program Managers will provide two weeks of general training about Super Stars Literacy mission and policies, as well as specific training in the Super Stars Literacy Volunteer Program. Weekly training will continue throughout the year.
Commitment:
Members must complete at least 1,700 hours for the 11-month duration of the program. (Approximately 45 hours a week; 9:00a.m.-6:00p.m). This position requires working approximately two to three evenings a month and occasional weekends for trainings and events.
Program Duration:Mid-August 2013 to June 30, 2014.
Member Benefits:Living stipend of $17,000 a year (approximately $1,545 per month). A $5,550 education award is provided at the end of the year for qualified student loans or future education expenses. Basic medical and dental insurance. Child care payment and loan forbearance available for those who qualify.
Requirements:All program staff are required to have DOJ and FBI fingerprinting, NSOPW check, and tuberculosis clearance prior to beginning work.
