Local 32BJ of SEIU is one of the largest and most dynamic labor unions in the United States, with 120,000 members in 8 states and Washington, DC. The union is at the forefront of driving a progressive policy agenda, including living and prevailing wage laws, responsible procurement and development standards, and access to health care. Local 32BJ has established a reputation for helping to elect pro-worker politicians and building a strong member activist base.
The Pennsylvania Political Director will help to lead key aspects of the union's legislative and electoral work in Pennsylvania and Delaware, as well as support for its organizing program. This position will report to the Deputy Political Director and will be based in Philadelphia.
Job Responsibilities:
- · Working closely with the Political Director, Deputy Political Director, and elected leaders of Local 32BJ, develop and drive all union political activity in PA and DE, including through field activities, lobby visits, phone banking, and events.
- · Ensure that electoral, legislative, organizing, and member capacity work across the region is aligned with Local 32BJ priorities.
- · Plan and implement electoral program for local, state, and federal elections.
- · Build strong relationships with elected officials, state council leaders, and 32BJ staff and members.
- · Monitor statewide policy issues and work to further the legislative goals of Local 32BJ through campaigns and member mobilizations.
- · Support contract and organizing campaigns, including rallies, press events and targeted owner activity.
- · Develop member activists across the state, including through the American Dream Fund PAC.
- · Directly supervise 2 political coordinators.
- · Develop strong working relationships with elected officials, political staff from other SEIU Locals and the State Council, other unions, community organizations and coalition partners, and rank and file members.
Qualifications:
- · 4-8 years of experience in labor, political, or community organizing
- · Ability to design and implement powerful and effective political programs
- · Experience successfully managing staff in a team setting
- · Strong knowledge of legislative processes
- · Excellent communications skills and the ability to build strong working relationships with stakeholders across the union
- · Ability to travel frequently across Pennsylvania and Delaware
- · A strong commitment to the work of Local 32BJ
