Description

In collaboration with the Executive Director of APHA and the Associate Executive Director for Health Policy and Practice, sets the vision, mission and agenda for all work undertaken by the Center for Public Heath Policy (CPHP) at APHA. Works closely with Center staff on developing consistent and methodologically sound processes, methodology, research, and dissemination strategies for work undertaken by the Center staff. Oversees the development, review and preparation of the Center's products and activities, including white papers, reports, issue briefs, booklets, webinars, presentations, meetings, and memoranda on issues and/or legislation related to public health policy and program areas that are relevant to APHA policy priorities. Supervises and supports all staff of the Center for Public Health Policy. Collaborates with government relations, communications, advocacy, affiliate affairs, and continuing education staff to develop strategies, analyses, and supporting documents that support APHA's legislative agenda in accordance with the established priorities and policies of the Association. Supports the Associate Executive Director on special projects as needed. Attends coalition meetings and prepares policy materials on APHA policy priorities in coordination with senior staff. Works with Director of Communications to promote Policy Center products, develop communications strategies around release of materials and prepare materials for media. Coordinates production of web pages and updates of web content as needed. Develops relationships of potential benefit to APHA and its members with coalitions; individuals in government, industry or agencies; and other entities with which interaction is essential or useful on policy issues of common interest. Seeks external funding for Center activities and products through the development of external stakeholder relationships and writing of grants. Manages grants obtained for Center activities and maintains strong relationships with grant program officers and other stakeholders. Supervises staff support to APHA's Joint Policy Committee. Participates in all senior staff and other required APHA meetings. Reports to the Associate Executive Director for Public Health Policy and Practice.

Graduate degree in public health required. Minimum 5 years of professional experience in policy analysis work in a public health, government, consulting, association or legislative setting. Supervisory experience preferred. Exceptional verbal and written communications skills. Ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of audiences. Broad-based knowledge of health policy and detailed knowledge of issues impacting public health. Excellent research and quantitative skills. Experience seeking grants with proven success is preferred. Knowledge and understanding of federal policy-making process and political landscape. The ability to manage staff, multiple tasks and projects is required.
