Development Officer Ghana

Overview: The role of the Ghana Development Officer is to start up and direct an Exponential Education tutoring center which will provide cost effective tutoring to those in need. This is a full time position in Ghana and perfect for someone looking to gain experience in the field of international development and business.

Commitment: Exponential Education expects a minimum of 6 months commitment with the opportunity to extend. We expect this position to take about 35 hours per week.

Job Description: The Development Officer will play an essential role in the development, growth, and sustainability of Exponential Education. He/she will be responsible for setting up and directing a brand new tutoring center in Kumasi, Ghana. The tutoring center will provide general tutoring, SAT/TOFEL tutoring, college advising and application assistance. The tutoring center will be closely linked to sister non-profit Exponential Education. The goal of the center is to provide better access to quality education for all. The role involves creating curriculums, classroom training and lesson plans for students. You will also be training, monitoring and managing 2/3 volunteers who will also tutor in the center. You will design and direct the operations of the tutoring center, and work closely with Exponential Education to provide inexpensive education options for students.

Duties May Also Include:

- Designing SAT and college advising curriculums to assist students who may want to study in the states.

- Training volunteers to also teach and tutor students.

- Directing the Tutoring center; managing finances, advertising, every day affairs, holding classes, scheduling, etc

- Assisting students with choosing colleges, applications, entrance essays, SAT registration, SAT subject tests, scholarship applications, etc.

- Serving as a representative of Exponential Education to any interested parties in the United States as needed

- Marketing the tutoring center

- Researchign competitor tutor centers and ensuring that the Exponential Education tutoring center is providing top quality services

- Coordinating the renting and furnishing of an office space in Kuamsi in conjunction with the Director of Operations

Qualifications: We are looking for early career candidates in the field of education, international development, and business who are interested in gaining experience and growing with us. Passionate individuals who fit the following criteria are encouraged to apply:

- Outgoing personality, comfortable talking both in person and on the phone

- Previous teaching/tutoring experience preferred (but not neccassary)

- Completed at least a BA/BS from US University

- Self-motivated and organized, working well with little over sight

- Strong SAT scores (and GRE scores if applicable)

- Experience creating a budget, developing a business plan, marketing a product, and playing a key role in the functining of a business

-Leadership or Management experience

- at least 6 months experience living, working, or traveling in Africa, a minimum of 1 year prefered

- Passion for international education, development, and supporting children in Africa a must

Preferred Start Date: August 5th (dates flexible)

Compensation: Compensation will be approximately 200 cedis per month depending on experience (enough to live on in Ghana). After a successful completion of 2 quarters, salary will have a significant increase. We will also provide shared housing.

Currently Exponential Education puts nearly all of its funds into supporting children and running our programs in Africa. As we continue to grow and undergo a transitional phase we hope to bring on early career staffers that will grow with our organization. Unfortunately, we cannot cover the cost of international travel, visas, and health insurance.

Upon completion of the contract Exponential Education is prepared to assist with letters of recommendation and helping with job placement, using our considerable network of NGOs both in the United States and in Africa.
