Position: Assistant Director for Early Childhood Department

Qualifications:

Master's degree in Early Childhood Education and at least two years experience working in an Early Childhood or Head Start Program. Must have at least two years supervisory experience. Prefers experience in working with multi-cultural families and community-based programs. Strong knowledge of Creative Curriculum and developmentally appropriate practices for young children. Knowledge of CDA and NAEYC accreditation process is a plus.

Requirements and Responsibilities:

  • Provide educational and administrative leadership to the staff
  • Current New York State Early Childhood Certification (B-2)
  • Criminal background check and New York State Central registry of Child Abuse and Neglect screening
  • Thorough knowledge of early childhood development and curriculum
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Must be able to work sensitively and effectively with individuals of diverse educational, socio-economic, and cultural background.
  • Reviews and evaluates child development plans and activities to assure services provided are culturally, linguistically, and developmentally appropriate and inclusive of individual levels of ability, interests and developmental rates and children with special needs.
  • Develops and implements a process of on-going monitoring to assure each enrolled child receives required developmental screenings; assures that on-going assessments of each child's growth and development is utilized for individualized learning plans are created for each child and updated on a regular basis.
  • Develops and oversees the implementation of a training plan to assure all early childhood educational staff acquire and enhance skills needed to implement education services goals and objectives, complies with New York State Preschool Common Core Performance Standards.
  • Participate in arranging/leading staff development training on and off-site
  • Excellent ability to work in tandem with other city and state government agencies (ie. DOHMH, DOB, DOI, NYCHA, DOE, etc.)
  • Ability to supervise classrooms; ensure that all children's records are kept up-to-date.
  • Assist Director in enrollment process; conduct tours for families on the waitlist as schedule allows; acclimate new families to the classrooms and transition families to new classrooms as needed.
  • Ability to accept directions and demonstrate strong follow-through.
  • Ability to prioritize and direct information appropriately.
  • Ability to observe and exercise sound judgment in making decisions pertaining to child health and safety.
  • Attend to other related duties as assigned.
