The job of Afterschool Teacher involves taking the initiative to develop and implement an after school program for children of survivors of domestic violence. The Afterschool Teacher in conjunction with other staff will develop a program suitable to the needs of the children living at The Second Step. The age range of the children is typically 5 to 11.
The Afterschool Teacher develops age appropriate curriculum that will help the children develop self esteem and confidence in their ability to relate to their peers and adults in an age appropriate and non-violent way as well as work towards improving the kids' academic performance.
The Afterschool Teacher is supervised by the Afterschool Coordinator. As time permits and under their direction, he/she will provide parenting support and implement and facilitate additional children's services.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
Primary Responsibilities
Co-run after-school program from 12:30-6 with Afterschool Coordinator and alone as needed
Organize and maintain afterschool calendar including scheduling field trips, scheduling Caring Canines, scheduling WHJWL, etc.
Recruit and supervise volunteer staff and interns for afterschool program
Help coordinate and run volunteer training with other staff
Work within after-school budget
As Time Permits
Assist with trainings for community members on domestic violence
Work with the children and parents in the after school program to:
Provide parenting support
Assist with facilitation of children's groups and parent-child groups that address the social/emotional needs of parent's and their children
Assist with the implementation of children's services tutors, and family mentors in conjunction with other TSS staff
Other Duties
1. Attend staff and team meetings as scheduled.
2. Attend supervision on a regular basis.
3. Manage work time conscientiously, understanding the importance of arranging to meet the needs of the organization.
4. Share the responsibility of the program with the rest of the staff, the board and volunteers.
5. Be flexible and involve herself/himself in activities that may not necessarily be in the job description.
6. Participate in the on-call rotation (for additional compensation), which may occasionally require some work on nights and/or weekends as the need arises.
Qualifications:
· Energy, enthusiasm, and passion
· Flexibility and ability to work well under pressure
· Bachelor's degree preferred
· Demonstrated experience working with school-aged children
· Experience working with survivors of domestic violence helpful
Salary and Benefits: Competitive Salary and Benefits. This is a full-time, exempt position. Hours are generally Monday-Friday, 10am-6pm.
