The California Immigrant Policy Center (CIPC) is a non-partisan, non-profit statewide organization founded in response to the 1996 passage of federal immigrant and welfare laws that profoundly affected immigrants. CIPC helps to develop and support pro-immigrant public policy that aims at improving the quality of life for all Californians. CIPC also provides technical assistance, training and education on immigrant issues. Asian Americans Advancing Justice | Los Angeles (Advancing Justice | LA), fiscally sponsors CIPC.

Position Summary

CIPC is seeking a full-time Bay Area Organizer committed to immigrant rights. The Organizer's primary responsibility will be to work in collaboration with a robust network of immigrant-serving organizations, base-building community groups and pro-immigrant advocates to advance CIPC's legislative priorities and support local pro-immigrant policies. The position will cover the nine-county Bay Area, including San Mateo and Santa Clara counties, and other select regions of Northern California. As part of CIPC's Engagement Unit, the Organizer will also provide support to the organization's broader organizing and strategic planning development. The Organizer will be based in CIPC's Oakland office and will report to CIPC's Los Angeles-based Lead Organizer. Significant travel will be required.

Responsibilities

  • Represent CIPC in local, regional, and state immigrant rights and budget coalitions.
  • In the Bay Area, join and support networks of base building community groups and immigrant-serving organizations to advocate on immigrant-related policy and budget issues;
  • Assist local partners in developing new regional networks in burgeoning areas;
  • Develop new relationships with diverse community stakeholders in the Bay Area, and convene meetings and conference calls to promote communication;
  • Grow CIPC's organizational membership in the region;
  • Develop and conduct trainings on CIPC legislative priorities as well as related issues in partnership with allies;
  • Play a supporting role in organizing CIPC's annual state advocacy day in Sacramento;
  • Stay informed about key immigrant rights and state budget issues as they impact immigrant communities;
  • Provide programmatic support within CIPC's Engagement Unit.

Qualifications

  • Experience organizing and working with diverse communities;
  • Prior engagement with immigrant rights groups, base-building community organizations, labor unions, social justice advocacy organizations, faith-based, or student groups in the Bay Area;
  • Excellent relationship-building and public speaking skills;
  • Bachelor's degree preferred;
  • Demonstrated commitment to the mission and goals of CIPC;
  • Background in immigrant rights issues, low-income communities issues, or immigration policies;
  • Interest and experience in policy advocacy, with a focus on social justice issues;
  • Self-initiated, motivated, well-organized, able to work with minimal supervision;
  • Sound interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to work flexible hours including some nights and weekends;
  • Ability to travel throughout the Bay Area regularly and throughout the state as needed;
  • Knowledge of a language other than English – with Spanish strongly preferred and
  • Valid driver's license, liability insurance and access to a vehicle or alternate transportation required.

This position is funded for one year, with potential (not guaranteed) funding for future years.
