Job Title: Survivor Initiatives Assistant

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) is the leading national not-for-profit organization exclusively dedicated to understanding and preventing suicide through research, education and advocacy, and to reaching out to people with mental disorders and those impacted by suicide. The Survivor Initiatives Department provides resources and programs to support survivors of suicide loss (http://www.afsp.org/coping-with-suicide).

Job Summary: Will help to coordinate Survivor Initiatives programs/projects and provide administrative support for the department as a whole. Excellent opportunity for someone who has an interest in pursuing non-profit program management in the future (this is not a direct service position). Will work closely with local staff and volunteers who implement programs for survivors of suicide loss throughout the country and be responsible for collecting & tracking all program data. Position requires excellent interpersonal and organizational skills, the ability to work independently, manage diverse tasks, and problem solve effectively. Flexible start date: August 1, 2013

Main Duties:

  • Quickly and accurately respond to inquiries from a diverse constituency by phone/e-mail; particularly works with survivors of suicide loss, the general public, and all levels of staff and volunteers
  • Effectively organize and manage a high volume of information and requests
  • Regularly update web pages, communications, and documents
  • Coordinate logistics, manage registration, and serve as main point of contact for training programs offered several times per year
  • Accurately collect and track information for several national and international programs, create reports based on collected data, and oversee the maintenance of online directories
  • Process online applications, registrations, and other program forms
  • Provide support and guidance for volunteers nationwide
  • Administer/moderate live webinars
  • Supervise part-time administrative volunteers
  • Work during typical business hours with occasional flexibility
  • Other tasks and duties as assigned

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively by phone and e-mail
  • Highly organized with attention to detail and excellent follow-through on tasks
  • Strong computer and technical skills, including MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
  • Comfortable working with spreadsheets and managing large amounts of data/information
  • Demonstrated writing ability

Desired Qualifications:

  • Previous experience working with volunteers and/or in a Chapter organization
  • Proficiency in Spanish
  • Understanding of mental illness, grief and bereavement, and issues related to suicide
  • Experience with Raiser's Edge, EZ Publish, Photoshop, Mail Chimp, Wufoo, webinar software
