HELP USA, a nationally recognized leader in the provision of transitional housing, residential and social services has the following opportunity available at one of our sites located within the NYC metropolitan area:

Housing Specialist

This position is responsible for the provision of services and referrals with or on behalf of residents which should ensure the expeditious placement of individuals and families into permanent housing and assist families and individuals in becoming self-sufficient. Services and referrals should include, but not be limited to, training in the area of how to interview for apartments, how to complete housing forms, how to conduct an apartment search, referrals to housing resources, and how to activate utilities.

  • Responsible for conducting the Housing intake and Housing Assessment Interview for all new residents.
  • Responsible for completing the "Living Arrangements" in FACTORS and documenting all contact with and on behalf of the residents in "Encounters."
  • Responsible for the timely completion of the housing portion of the initial service plan/independent living plan and any indicated revisions.
  • Conducts housing workshops and meets with residents, minimally, once per month.
  • Arranges forums with outside providers e.g. Con Edison to provide information on topics related to securing and maintaining permanent housing.
  • Provides additional information/instruction on the skills required to secure and maintain permanent housing e.g. how to create and maintain a household budget.
  • Assists residents in the completion of all housing applications and ensures the applications are submitted to housing programs in a timely manner.
  • Responsible for developing new housing resources.
  • Escorts residents to view apartments and other appointments as indicated.
  • Participates in team meetings, case conferences, department meetings, weekly individual supervisory sessions, and staff training.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree or;
  • Associate's Degree with 3 years work experience in the employment counseling field or;
  • High School Diploma/equivalent with 3 – 5 years experience specific to the field of housing placement services for our client population or;
  • High School Diploma/equivalent with minimum 7 years experience of a combination of work experience in the housing placement services for our client population and other related experience within the social services field.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus.
  • Computer literate specifically with Microsoft applications required.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Valid NY, NJ or CT driver's license preferred.
