About ACIJ:

The Alabama Coalition for Immigrant Justice (ACIJ) is a network of individuals and organizations that seek to provide a united voice dedicated to ensuring the social, legal and civic rights of all immigrants in Alabama. ACIJ is challenging the nation's harshest anti-immigrant law, building a powerful grassroots movement among Alabama's immigrants and acting as a powerful agent of change.

Position Summary:

The Executive Director is responsible for leadership of a dynamic statewide coalition building a movement for immigrant and racial justice through grassroots community organizing and leadership development; advocacy for just and humane policies at the local, state and national levels; and creation of a welcoming climate for immigrant and communities of color in Alabama.

Core Responsibilities:

Work with Steering Committee, staff and communities to develop and work toward vision, goals and strategies for community organizing, policy development, leadership training and creation of a welcoming climate for immigrant and communities of color in Alabama.

Coordinate and provide oversight for critical areas of ACIJ work, including organizing, communications, legislative, policy and legal.

Create and implement leadership development strategies for staff and Steering Committee members.

Secure ongoing funding through development of grassroots fundraising strategies, a strong donor base, and grants.

Increase ACIJ membership.

Engage Steering Committee, Staff and Coalition Members in all areas of ACIJ mission and work.

Manage ACIJ Steering Committee relations, development and communications.

Coordinate and partner with national and regional immigrant rights organizations.

Direct, supervise and evaluate the work of ACIJ staff.

Build and maintain relationships with traditional and non-traditional allies.

Increase visibility of ACIJ and its mission within Alabama and across the country.

Ideal qualifications and qualities:

  • Five (5) + years of appropriate experience in leading or coordinating a diverse coalition of organizations and individuals. A bachelor's or masters' degree or equivalent experience in policy, planning, community/organizing, human resources, or administration.
  • Strong commitment to ACIJ's goals of building a powerful voice for immigrants in Alabama.
  • Understanding of the issues and policies that affect immigrants, especially in the South.
  • Understanding and awareness of the social, cultural and political climate in Alabama.
  • Experience with project coordination in an interdisciplinary/team environment.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing to professionals and general public.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, group process/facilitation; conflict resolution experience.
  • Grant writing experience with foundation, state and/or federal grants.
  • Experience in grassroots fundraising and donor development.
  • Highly proficient with Microsoft Office and general computer skills.
  • Personal vehicle with applicable insurance. Ability and willingness to travel and work nights and weekends as needed.
  • Ability to collaborate with other advocacy groups, elected officials and constituents.
  • Fluency in English and Spanish highly preferred.

Salary will be based on experience and qualifications.
