TITLE: Mental Health Specialist -Social Worker

STATUS: Full-time

SCHEDULE: Monday - Friday, 11 AM - 7 PM (hours outside of this schedule will occasionally be necessary)

DEPARTMENT: Youth and Community Development Services

REPORTS TO: Teen Pregnancy Prevention Program Coordinator

LOCATION: Lower East Side, Manhattan and Bushwick, Brooklyn

SALARY: $40,000-$45,000, plus excellent benefits

JOB SUMMARY:

Mental Health is a central component of the Teen Pregnancy Prevention Program at Grand Street Settlement. The program will be replicating the Carrera Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Program, and, in addition to offering age- and stage-appropriate reproductive and sexual health education, this holistic model of pregnancy prevention focuses on the development of the whole child. The additional components of the program are: Education, Job Club (internships and the development of financial literacy), Mental Health, Self-Expression (arts), Lifetime Individual Sports, and comprehensive medical services. The TPPP social worker conducts weekly socialization groups (Power Group), which focus on group activities and theme-based discussions. The social worker also works closely with the Family Life and Sex Education (FLSE) Coordinator and engages in short-term crisis intervention with program participants and their families.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS:

  • MSW required, License and SIFI certification preferred
  • At least 3 years' experience leading groups, providing clinical services, and/or serving as a case manager for youth and families, particularly to adolescents in underserved communities
  • Experience with adolescent reproductive and sexual health
  • Excellent classroom management skills, utilizing a creative approach to engaging youth
  • Strong organizational and computer skills
  • Outstanding collaborative skills
  • Bilingual Spanish/English a plus
  • Experience including youth in programmatic development a plus

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conduct weekly Power Group counseling sessions with participants.
  • Provide confidential, individual counseling to participants.
  • Case conference with FLSE coordinator around issues that encompass both human sexuality and mental health. Refer cases to the FLSE coordinator when appropriate.
  • Provide crisis intervention, short-term issue resolution, and continued follow up for youth and families.
  • Be familiar with, and provide referrals to, local mental health professionals for long term/or intensive mental health interventions.
  • Maintain records of all individual meetings, baseline assessments, confidential correspondences, and case notes in the database and/or a locked file.
  • Collaborate with medical care provider(s) on participant mental health issues.
  • Collaborate with Education Coordinator to address participant school issues, such as drop-out prevention and behavior management.
  • Supervise graduate school social work interns.
  • Review cases with the assigned clinical supervisor.
  • Complete and submit monthly reports on the progress of individual cases and on Power Group activities.
  • Provide trainings for the TPPP staff that will build the capacity of fellow staff to consider the issues that young people face in their general development and in the development of their sexuality.
  • Meet with Program Coordinator for weekly supervision and attend TPPP program staff meetings.

Collaborate with the entire TPPP program staff to create a supportive and nurturing environment in which youth can learn and thrive.
