Job description

Working America, the community affiliate of the AFL-CIO, is the fastest growing organization for working people in the country. With more than 3 million members recruited since 2003, Working America recruits and mobilizes people who do not have a union on the job in support of working families' issues.

The Organizer will work with the Organizing Director to encourage workplace organizing and to manage the development and implementation of associate member programs with affiliates.

Reports to: Organizing Director

Duties:

  • Take advantage of interest in organizing including:
    • Building communities of interest by workplace, industry, or geography;
    • Moving workers up a ladder of engagement including use of online chats and conference calls;
    • Following up with workers who visit FixMyJob.com and 'Dear David';
    • Assist in development and implementation of projects with affiliates interested in building associate member programs with Working America;
    • Provide a bridge between communication campaign needs of associate member programs and Working America communications team;
    • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Previous experience and familiarity with all aspects of union organizing campaigns required;
  • Knowledge of national and local structures of the labor movement;
  • Familiarity with new forms of organizing;
  • Critical thinking and analysis skills;
  • Ability to work both collaboratively and independently;
  • Ability to represent Working America to a variety of allies and audiences;
  • Strong writing and verbal skills;
  • Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Word and Excel;
  • Online organizing experience or comfortable familiarity;
  • Some travel required;
  • Bi-lingual (English and Spanish) desired.
