TEACHING ARTIST: ALLL 6-8/Literacy

LeAp is seeking artists and creative individuals interested in teaching LeAp's very effective and engaging Arts based Learning Leads to Literacy 6th-8th (ALLL 6-8) program. ALLL 6-8 teaching artists use songwriting, bookmaking or graphic novels and theater arts to teach and reinforce literacy skills in ELA and the 6th-8th grade curriculum. ALLL's hands-on, active, arts-based strategies are designed to fully integrate into the academic curriculum. Individuals should be comfortable using a wide variety of activities in teaching, must have proven experience with theater, music and visual arts, be able to teach grammar and writing skills, and be open to exploring new ideas. Training in the ALLL strategies is provided. Each ALLL class is one hour long. Openings are available to individuals willing to teach four classes a day, two times a week from April 2013 June 2013. ALLL 6-8 teaching artists must also plan monthly with each teacher. They will also be required to attend Staff Development workshops 1x per month at the LeAp offices.

Compensation for ALLL is $50 per class plus additional funds for monthly PD workshops, planning, and staff development. Attendance at all training sessions is required. Bachelor's degree with experience in visual art, music, and theater and teaching experience with a middle school population preferred. Artists must have strong teaching and classroom management skills; proven experience and ability to teach music, visual art and theater arts; excellent writing skills, the ability to write in several genres; an understanding of grammatical construction; interest in history as it relates to the 6th grade: Geography and World Studies, 7th grade: American History through the Civil War, and 8th Grade: American History: Civil War to present. Enthusiasm and flexibility required.

Must be willing to teach in the BRONX.
