Description

The Hetrick-Martin Institute (HMI) is a leading professional provider of social support and programming for all at-risk youth, particularly lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or questioning ("LGBTQ") youth. HMI provides a broad range of vital programming to thousands of youth each year, ranging in age from 12 to 24, from the five boroughs of New York City and the surrounding metropolitan area. HMI has also recently initiated programming in Newark, NJ.

We are seeking an Educational Specialist, SISTA for our New York City location.

Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Implement HIV prevention Evidence-Based Intervention, Sisters Informing Sisters about Topics on AIDS (SISTA) programming, targeted to meet the needs of young transwomen.

2. Engage young people involved in Hetrick-Martin to participate in the SISTA Program.

3. Maintain fidelity to SISTA procedures.

4. Work closely with other HMI Programs in providing programs and services to the young people; communicate with staff on individual cases; and assist in case planning.

5. Outreach and engage youth for enrollment in After-School Programs.

6. Prepare for and facilitate group-based activities, and supervise youth.

7. Develop and implement evaluation tools and resulting data to inform program creation and design.

8. Assist Coordinator in achieving all measurement outcomes for the After-School Department, and provide support in evaluation of interventions and program.

9. Develop and implement program evaluation and client outcome measures.

10. Track youth member enrollment/activities and contractual requirements, and prepare reports and paperwork requested as needed by agency or funders.

11. Maintain client level data, including progress notes and referral logs.

12. Maintain group level documentation, including sign-in sheets and session summaries.

13. Submit narrative and statistical reports to funders.

14. Outreach community resources and provide training and technical assistance as needed.

15. Represent HMI citywide events.

16. Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

1. Bachelor's degree in social work or related human services field.

2. Extensive knowledge of HIV prevention with LGBTQ youth.

3. Knowledge of Effective Behavioral Interventions.

4. Knowledge of the transgender community in New York City.

5. At least two years experience with diverse population of adolescents in an urban setting, particularly transgender youth and their partners; as well as knowledge of lesbian, gay, bisexual and questioning youth from various cultures and backgrounds.

6. Experience planning, implementing and evaluating HIV prevention programs.

7. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including conflict mediation and public speaking.

8. Ability to exercise independent judgment when appropriate; strong decision-making skills.

9. Computer Skills: Strong with proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.

Additional Desirable Qualifications:

1. Extensive knowledge of one or all of the following health and wellness related issues:, pregnancy prevention, substance use, nutrition, violence prevention.

2. Background in the health education and/or health promotion programming with youth.

3. Bi-lingual (Spanish-English) skills.
