Accommodation

Room and board are provided via local host families. Living with a host family can be one of the most rewarding yet challenging aspects of your experience in Chile. There are many benefits to living with a host family, including improving your Spanish and participating in Chilean culture. The most challenging aspect of living with a Chilean host family is adapting to new ways and customs. Please keep in mind that your host family may not be a traditional family, but could very possibly be just a single mother and her children, or an older couple with no children.
Your host family is given an allowance to supplement the additional costs to house and feed you. This amount is just about enough to cover the extra expenses; the family is not benefiting financially. For the most part, host families take in a volunteer either for commitment to their school, or because they are interested in the cultural exchange and the possibility of learning some English. Also, many families value the Ministry of Education's (MINEDUC) effort to reinforce English language learning in Chile, and they want to help young foreigners who are volunteering for their country's benefit.

School Placements

English Opens Doors Volunteers teach alongside a Chilean co-teacher in public schools. Volunteers are placed all throughout Chile, and work with students ranging from 5th grade (approximately 10-11 years old) to 12th grade (approximately 17-18 years old).
The volunteer's main responsibilities are:

• To focus on improving the students' speaking and listening skills.
• To motivate the students to take an interest in learning English.
• To share their culture with the students, thus broadening their worldview.
Volunteers should expect to spend approximately 25 hours a week in the classroom and another 10 hours each week in lesson planning and leading an extracurricular activity. Volunteers and their head teacher will follow the teaching model prescribed by the program (45 minutes teaching with the head teacher and the following 45 minutes teaching half the class on their own).
Volunteers will also have the opportunity to participate in other educational initiatives led by the Ministry of Education such as Spelling Bee, Public Speaking competitions and Winter and/or Summer Camps.

Stipend

Volunteers receive a volunteer allowance equivalent to 60,000 CLP per month served or a proportional amount for a partial month served (in the case of a partial month served, volunteers will only receive an amount based on the number of days serviced). The money will be paid to you in regular intervals. At your orientation session, staff members will explain how and when you can pick up the payment using a passport or Chilean identity card. The allowance honors your volunteer service and helps to defray basic costs and teaching-related expenses but is not designed to reimburse all of your expenses. You must have access to extra finances: you should not be relying on your allowance to fully support yourself or cover any emergency expenses.
