Summary: Compassion and Choices is the oldest national nonprofit organization working to improve end of life care and expand end of life choices.
The Massachusetts Field Organizer will work closely with the Massachusetts Campaign Manager to formalize and streamline grassroots activities while building capacity and infrastructure. The Organizer will also provide key support for outreach activities, particularly around volunteer activities and issue-based campaigns.
The Massachusetts Field Organizer coordinates and manages interns to implement the agency's grassroots organizing activities within the state.
The purpose of the grassroots-organizing program is to mobilize individuals to voice support for our legislative goals and full access to end-of-life choice.
Please note: This is a part-time 24 hour a week salaried position and does not include benefits. Candidate must be willing to work from home.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Represents Compassion & Choices in the Community
- Identify and coordinate trainings, briefings, and other presentations for local groups.
- Cultivate relationships with new community groups.
Grassroots Organizing
- Develop organizing plan and goals in conjunction with Massachusetts Campaign Manager for recruiting and maintaining activists - this includes working with volunteers on implementation.
- Identify tabling, recruiting, and other visibility opportunities.
- Identify and cultivate "key contacts" in targeted communities.
- Mobilize activists for special purposes, including letter writing campaigns, phone banking, canvassing, days of action, visibility events, legislative lobbying, public health committee hearing etc.
External Communication
- Assist in creation of effective advocacy alerts for activist activities and events.
- Prepare reports for Massachusetts Campaign Manager.
Database Management
- Oversee maintenance of data in activist database.
- Monitor list growth; set list growth goals.
Administrative Duties
- Supply Massachusetts Campaign Manager with information for board reports and strategic plan updates.
- Assist in maintaining electronic filing system
- Participate in annual planning process.
- Track time spent and expenses as required.
- Coordinate training for volunteers and interns, with Massachusetts Campaign Manager.
- Completes other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
Bachelor level degree in political science/public health or other related field. In lieu of education an equal number of years in a similar position will suffice.
Experience:
- Knowledgeable about issues of choice, ethics, health and social justice.
- Experience preferred in lobbying and/or political campaigns, or community organizing.
- Familiarity with the legislative process preferred.
- Familiarity with and commitment to the Compassion & Choices mission.
Skills:
- Excellent computer skills, including Excel, Word, Outlook, Database management.
- Strong administrative and organizational skills
- Experience with Facebook and other social media
- Exceptional interpersonal, organizational and communication skills, including writing skills.
- Ability to earn the confidence of a wide range of internal and external constituents.
- Ability to demonstrate public speaking and training skills preferred.
- Ability to gracefully manage multiple projects and to meet multiple deadlines.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Physical demands:
- Long hours at the computer are necessary at times.
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation to travel within the community for programs
- Ability to lift 25 pounds to carry items to and from health fairs and community events.
