Reporting to the Senior Director of Communications, who leads the office, the Director of Interactive Strategy and Development (Director of Interactive Development) will be responsible for turning marketing strategies, visual designs, and copy into fully functioning websites and other interactive media. Leading a team of technical developers and vendors, the director will determine the right technologies and processes for interactive media development, manage the production and quality control process, and ensure MIT Sloan is providing users with a leading-edge interactive experience consistent with MIT's heritage of innovation.
With the Dean's commitment to raising the visibility of the school, the Director of Interactive Development plays the critical role of providing the ability to build fully functioning websites, mobile and social media sites, videos, apps, printed documents and other media, while ensuring we are utilizing the best processes and technologies to deliver exceptional experiences to our users.
In keeping with the office's strategy of organizing for functional excellence, the Director of Interactive Development will provide deep expertise in interactive media technical development and production and will be responsible for providing the production capacity and capabilities to meet the communications needs of the school.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Lead the development and production of all interactive media including websites, mobile, social media, apps, emails, feeds, video, etc.
- Transform visual designs and marketing copy into fully functioning websites and other interactive media
- Provide sufficient production capacity and capabilities to ensure the office can translate its ideas and designs into digital experiences within aggressive timeframes
- Lead interactive strategy for the office, ensuring that MIT Sloan delivers outstanding digital experiences for users in keeping with the technology-leading heritage of MIT
- In partnership with Sloan Technology Services, determine best digital platforms, technologies, software, and workflows
- Ensure the office is utilizing the optimal technologies to accomplish its mission
- Manage a staff of talented full-time and freelance interactive developers and vendor partnerships to enable rapid development of impactful interactive experiences, and manage and mentor staff to achieve high standards of excellence
- Manage efficient production workflow, meet production deadlines, and manage budgets
- Provide scheduling and budget estimates to ensure accurate job planning
- Oversee all aspects of interactive media development and production, including CMS management, front-end and template development, CSS and HTML coding, responsive design production, widget and app development, search engine optimization, etc., in both PHP and .NET environment
- Oversee electronic publishing system for the office
- Work closely with Sloan Technology Services to provide leading-edge marketing and communications technology solutions for the school
- Work with STS to integrate back-end databases and other functionality with front-end presentations to deliver extraordinary interactive experiences
- Develop interactive media that exceed technical performance criteria
- Consult with internal clients to develop digital solutions that meet their marketing and communications needs while supporting overall MIT Sloan technology strategies
- Manage and maintain websites and other interactive media
- Manage conversion of static websites onto robust content management system
- Integrate digital asset production across the office
- Update static sites until converted to CMS
- Conduct or arrange client training
- Personally take on development projects as necessary
- Partner with other functions within the office including the visual design, copy, media relations, account management, and marketing to assure functions are working effectively together
- Be a resourceful, collaborative team player who enhances the culture and morale of the office
- Maintain a supportive and productive environment within the Office and with client and vendor relationships
Job Requirements
REQUIREMENTS:General:
- Bachelor's degree (relevant advanced degree strongly preferred)
- Minimum seven years' related experience
- Experience leading the interactive development function for a nationally known organization or agency
- Excellent interactive media development skills across web, mobile, social video, email, etc.
- Strong project management and client relationship-building skills
- Ability to clearly communicate technical issues to laymen and to translate their feedback to developers and other technology focused personnel
- Technology expertise with insights about technology trends and solutions
- Visionary leader and detail-oriented manager
- Experience supervising and leading a high performance team of developers
- Print production experience
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work independently and as a member of a team
- Experience delivering for clients and making deadlines

Technical Skills:
- Expert knowledge of the primary technologies associated with multichannel interactive media development
- Expert knowledge of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and other front-end development tools
- Development experience in LAMP (PHP) and ASP.NET frameworks
- Experience managing and building websites on CMS systems including Ektron, Sitecore, WordPress, Drupal and SharePoint (particularly Ektron)
- Experience with design and publishing software including Adobe Creative Suite and video editing software
- Deep understanding of new technologies, including HTML5, responsive design, etc.
- Strong skills in SEO, efficient interactive development practices and site analytics
- Experience managing video in Brightcove and other platforms
- Experience integrating third-party APIs such as Google Maps, YouTube, etc.
- Extensive experience managing social media presences, including LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, etc.
