Job Description: Youth Program Coordinator
Supervisor: Deputy Director
Full Time Equivalent: Full Time
Work Hours: Approximately 9:00 – 5:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. Flexibility needed for team meetings, special projects, agency events, parent nights, etc.
Program Goals and Objectives:
The purpose of Centro Hispano's Juventud Program is to provide academic support to Latino youth through positive educational activities. Juventud aims to motivate Latino students to stay in school and to build a strong foundation for success in school. The program also strives to provide participants with knowledge of and pride in Latino culture and heritage. Youth program coordinators play the most essential role in this program by working to involve the community through:
- Recruiting, training, and placing volunteer tutors as needed during the school day and in after-school programs
- Providing parents with the information necessary to be involved in their child's education through frequent parent meetings.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Work as part of a team to recruit and screen volunteer tutors
- Work as part of a team to plan a variety of city-wide tutor training sessions.
- Organize site-specific training for volunteer tutors as appropriate.
- Ensure that all volunteers placed at your site receive proper orientation and training
- Match volunteer tutors one-on-one or in small groups with underachieving students as needed during the school day or after school.
- Place volunteer tutors with other after school academic support programs as needed.
- Ensure that the efforts of volunteer tutors are adequately recognized
- Hold monthly or bi-monthly support meetings with volunteers. Disseminate best-practice information to volunteer tutors through newsletters, email, etc.
- Assure timely communication of program updates and delivery of newly developed materials to volunteers.
- Track volunteer progress and evaluates volunteer performance.
- Keep thorough records. Complete quarterly, annual, and other reports as required by supervisor.
- Publicize tutoring services that are available to teachers, parents, and others as appropriate.
- Work with school and community based organization staff to disseminate information to parents underachieving students about available educational and recreational services and how best to take advantage of them.
- Create and maintain a system for sharing information among school staff and service providers about students being assisted and the services they are receiving
- Create linkages between the middle school curriculum and services provided by community based programs.
- Create opportunities for students to participate in cultural events in the Latino community and receive exposure to Latino arts and culture
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's degree or Associates degree + 2 years work experience in areas of social work, community organizing, youth development, education and/or volunteer coordination.
- Interest and education in developing high quality educational and learning opportunities.
- Exceptional understanding of the needs of students in 6th, 7th and 8th grade.
- Must be fluent in Spanish and English and able to pass written and verbal tests.
- Must be goal oriented, problem solver, and solution driven
- Must have strong time management skills and the ability to balance multiple tasks.
- Must have proven ability to work both independently and as part of a team. Demonstrated ability to forge partnership with a wide variety of organizations/institutions.
- Strong commitment to the mission of Centro Hispano of DaneCounty and to working with youth and families from diverse racial/cultural populations.
- Strong written, presentation, and public speaking skills
- Computer experience including Microsoft Word, Microsoft Outlook, and Internet navigation is highly desirable.
- Knowledge of the educational support service system available to middle school students in MadisonPublic Schools.
- Ability to serve as a liaison between school staff and faculty and the staff of community based programs.
- Must pass criminal background check.
