The Khaled bin Sultan Living Oceans Foundation (KSLOF) is dedicated to the conservation and restoration of living oceans and pledges to champion their preservation through research, education and a commitment to Science Without Borders.® It achieves its goal of protecting and restoring ocean health by conducting cutting-edge research on the world's coral reefs, distributing its findings, and providing educational and media content that improves ocean literacy and awareness. The Foundation is nearing the end of a 5-year global voyage via the research vessel Golden Shadow to conduct the worlds' largest survey and high resolution mapping expedition of coral reefs. The Foundation is committed to sharing its findings and data with governments, nonprofits, educators and scientists committed to ocean health.

In 2013, KSLOF relaunched its website (http://www.livingoceansfoundation.org/). It has stepped up its social media efforts in order to generate more awareness and visibility, particularly for its vast and breathtaking archive of marine photos and videos.

KSLOF is hiring a part-time Social Media Specialist to expand its social media presence and use KSLOF's social media platforms to generate awareness for the Foundation. We desire an energetic self-starter who can work independently, is an excellent communicator, curious, has good research skills, and can be an integral part of our small, active team. The ideal candidate would have a background or interest in conservation, particularly in ocean conservation issues.

This position is an exciting opportunity to build a growing social media presence and use social media to reach and inspire more people about ocean conservation and to communicate the importance and implications of KSLOF's research. Position objectives, responsibilities, and required qualifications follow:

Objectives:

(1) Increase visitors and engagement at KSLOF's social media platforms.

(2) Use social media to drive traffic to KSLOF's website and YouTube channel.

Responsibilities:

  • Understand the context and importance of the Foundation's mission and work with KSLOF's Communications Director on KSLOF messaging, so that social media strategy and messaging are consistent with all external and internal Foundation communications.
  • Refine overall KSLOF social media strategy, incorporating existing KSLOF platforms, i.e., Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Pinterest, and Google+.
  • Manage multiple social media channels (Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, Google+, Youtube) daily. Create ideas and input content using KSLOF research, videos, photographs, partner content, and blogs.
  • Input content into social media management tools. Manage and distribute KSLOF editorial calendar. Implement schedule that uses insights and metrics tools to maximize eyeballs.
    • Recommend and implement social media campaigns and programs, leveraging topical ocean news and LOF activities and events.
    • Regular coordination/communication with KSLOF team members and the KSLOF Director of Communications, to whom this position will report, to identify content important to KSLOF.
    • Conduct outbound community building by working with partners and identifying new potential partners (including individuals, bloggers, influential, corporations, and nonprofits).
  • Identify ways to increase online video viewership, recommend, and implement.
  • Monitor social media engagement and respond as appropriate.
  • Analyze social media metrics, coordinate with website administrator on Google Analytics, and distribute topline reports to appropriate KSLOF staff members.
  • Keep on top of changes and trends in leading social media platforms and adjust strategy and tactics as appropriate.
  • Ensure that social media strategy and content are integrated and coordinated with website communications, newsletter communications, KSLOF events, and community building for blog, leveraging all opportunities to optimize visitors and engagement on each KSLOF communication channel.

Qualifications:

  • Ability to work in KSLOF New Carrolton office for at least the first 3 months in position. Work can be handled remotely following initial 3 months.
  • Estimated hours: 20 hours per week
  • College degree
  • Minimum of 2-3 years of social media management experience
  • Strong organizational and project management skills
  • Commitment to Khaled bin Sultan Living Oceans Foundation mission
  • Salary will be commensurate with experience.
  • Familiarity with social media analytics programs.
  • Prior use of social media management platforms, e.g., Hootsuite, BufferApp, and/or Tweetdeck. Strong preference for knowledge and prior use of WordPress.
  • Excellent communication skills:
    • Writer who understands what type of copy works best on different social media platforms
    • Ability to break down complex ideas into understandable and compelling social media posts.
