Description

The Virginia Health Care Foundation (VHCF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to increasing access to primary health care for uninsured and medically underserved Virginians. Established as a public/private partnership by Virginia's General Assembly and its Joint Commission on Health Care in 1992, VHCF receives an annual state appropriation, which it is expected to supplement with funding from the private sector. VHCF is in the midst of a period of expanded vision and planned growth. The Director of Fund Development and Communications will play an integral role in this phase of the Foundation's evolution.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Director of Fund Development and Communications is responsible for monitoring and expanding the Virginia Health Care Foundation's fund development and external communications programs. This position is responsible for identifying and implementing strategies for the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of a diverse base of private funders. This position also works to create a strong, unified identity for VHCF and to raise awareness of VHCF's programs and successes with public and private funders, the media, state policymakers, state agencies, grantees, other partners, and the general public.

Areas of responsibility include: 1) implementation and evaluation of VHCF's fund development plan; 2) development, implementation and evaluation of VHCF's communications plan; 3) planning and oversight of signature events; 4) supervision of VHCF's Fund Development & Communications Coordinator; 5) staffing the Board's Fund Development and External Affairs Committees; and 5) developing and working within a program budget.

The Director of Fund Development and Communications reports to the Executive Director and is a part of VHCF's management team, which includes the Executive Director, Deputy Director, Director of Finance and the Director of Administration and Technology.

In fulfilling this role, the Director of Fund Development and Communications will have the following responsibilities:

Fund Development

  • Executing a strategic plan for fund development, which will increase revenues to support the strategic growth of VHCF.
  • Researching and identifying prospects, engaging in meetings with potential donors, and writing proposals to corporations, foundations, and selected individuals.
  • Maintaining VHCF's involvement with government combined campaigns, United Way campaigns, and other similar programs.
  • Coordinating and overseeing electronic gift tracking and stewardship activities such as preparing reports, invoices and gift acknowledgements, and other donor correspondence.
  • Preparing and/or coordinating preparation of required reports to donors.
  • Evaluating the efficacy and results of fund development efforts, and VHCF's fund development plan.

Communications

  • Developing and implementing a multi-pronged communications plan to raise awareness of VHCF among targeted audiences, and to complement VHCF fund development efforts.
  • Planning and overseeing the development, production, and maintenance of VHCF marketing and communications materials (e.g. annual report, press releases, and special event materials).
  • Identifying and helping implement meaningful media relations strategies.
  • Working with other VHCF staff to incorporate key messages into various presentations, VHCF's electronic newsletters, the website, social media platforms, and other means of communication.

Special Events

  • Planning and overseeing all programmatic and logistical aspects of VHCF's annual Legislative Day, including development of informational materials, soliciting participation, identifying appropriate gift and message, and execution of the event.
  • Planning and overseeing the implementation of VHCF's annual Heroes in Health Care event, including theme, logistics, sponsorships, awards, and all other activities necessary to host a successful event.
  • Identifying, planning, and overseeing any other special events that may benefit VHCF.

Board Committees/Board

  • Planning the agendas, preparing the reports for, and staffing the Board's quarterly Fund Development Committee and External Affairs Committee Meetings.
  • Preparing reports for the Board's quarterly meetings on progress with goals and activities and staffing the chairs of each committee so that they are appropriately prepared.
  • Engaging in and working with VHCF's Boards of Trustees and Advisors to increase exposure and funding for VHCF via the annual Trustee/Advisor Campaign, and other activities as opportunities arise.

Budget

  • Developing an annual budget for VHCF's fund development and communications activities.
  • Monitoring expenditures and operating within a budget.

Oversight of Fund Development and Communications Coordinator

  • Overseeing and working collegially with VHCF's Fund Development and Communications Coordinator to implement identified aspects of VHCF's fund development and communications plans; log and track gifts; prepare reports; execute special events; and carryout other aspects of VHCF's advancement efforts as needed.

Coordination with the Executive Director, Director of Finance and Other VHCF Staff

The Director of Fund Development and Communications is responsible for ongoing coordination with the:

  • Executive Director to ensure that VHCF's fund development and communications activities are synchronistic with and complementary to the overall direction of VHCF, the various initiatives which VHCF is undertaking, and established relationships with existing partners, donors and the media.
  • Director of Finance to ensure the timely and accurate recording of any gifts and gift restrictions or special directions; to ensure reconciliation of contributions reports; and to track and monitor program expenditures.
  • Management Team or program personnel to stay updated on the progress of key programs, and to obtain any information or assistance necessary to fulfill fund development or communications responsibilities.

Other Responsibilities:

The Director of Fund Development and Communications may be responsible for undertaking other responsibilities or special projects at the direction or request of the Board of Trustees or Executive Director. Examples of these activities include:

  • Staffing designated Board committees and preparing associated issue briefs;
  • Assisting with the preparation of materials for Board retreats; and
  • Providing leadership and or/oversight for various initiatives as the opportunities arise.
