POSITION AVAILABLE: Organizer; Position located in Oregon (Six-month Contract)
REPORTS TO: Executive Director, Common Cause Oregon
RESPONSIBILITIES: Organize Common Cause Oregon membership & coalitions to empower public participation in the political process in defense of open, accountable, democratic government. Specifically, staff the launching of a new multi-year project to empower a broader community voice on judicial reform issues at a time when access to justice in fair & impartial courts is at risk. Outreach to community-based organizations representing constituencies & perspectives missing from current judicial reform policy debates. Identify & recruit strategic partner organizations to form a community coalition on judicial reform. Help establish initial coalition structures & protocols, & facilitate the coalition in setting shared goals & developing joint campaigns. Staff the coalition's work, which may include public education & policy campaigns on current hot issues such as court funding & judicial selection. Support the coalition to monitor & evaluate the results of its efforts & implement course corrections as necessary. Serve as a liaison between the coalition & the legal community, funders and other stake holders. Organize Common Cause membership in support of broader coalition goals.
QUALIFICATIONS: Demonstrated experience organizing people & coalitions, developing & running campaigns, working in a culturally competent manner to broker interests & develop shared vision among diverse stakeholders, & representing organizational interests with sound judgment & professionalism. Good personal organization & follow through & ability to work to deadline. Candidates should possess strong verbal & written communication skills; have a working knowledge of Word and Excel; have excellent interpersonal abilities & cultural competency; and should be committed to public interest work.
PLUSES: The ideal candidate will have a familiarity with judicial reform or democracy reform issues, and/or ties to legal and non-legal communities relevant to this work; and have a working knowledge of social media tools like Facebook and Twitter.
