Background

Grassroots Campaigns, Inc (GCI) is a progressive political consulting firm that specializes in running face-to-face mobilization campaigns citizen (via door-to-door and on-the-street canvasses) for political parties, candidates, and advocacy groups. By running campaigns on behalf of groups such as the National Democratic Party, the American Civil Liberties Union, and The Nature Conservancy. GCI builds the membership, financial, and volunteer bases for these organizations. GCI also runs field campaigns for candidates and other organizations to mobilize citizen support for progressive causes at the local, state, and national level and encourage citizens to be actively engaged in politics.

Legal Counsel is responsible for ensuring legal compliance related to all GCI canvass offices and field projects across the country. The in-house counsel works with our senior management team and department heads and reports directly to the Vice President of Operations.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Procedure:Reviewing of internal procedures for compliance with state and federal law regarding employment and solicitation. Advising/Coaching directing team to proactively avoid disputes.
  • Management: Handling all disputes/legal matters which Grassroots Campaign is a party
  • Canvassing and Solicitation Registrations: Securing permits, maintaining state registrations and developing corresponding materials to comply with state and local charitable and political canvassing laws.
  • Support: Providing legal support to our administration and payroll departments
  • Contracts: The drafting of and review of client contracts.
  • Election Law: Guaranteeing FEC compliance for all election projects

Qualifications:

Strong communication skills, work ethic, and desire for political change are essential. Candidates must have an interest in public interest law and/or activism. Strong self-direction and the ability to take initiative are also necessary qualifications. An ability to work efficiently and handle numerous diverse tasks concurrently is essential.
