Description: We are currently seeking a Publications Specialist for Membership Development at the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW), a leading labor organization. The candidate will work collaboratively with team members and across the organization to develop and produce a variety of publications often within tight deadlines. This position is conveniently located in Washington, DC, one block from the Gallery Place Metro station. Competitive salary with regular increases and outstanding benefits package.
Duties:
- Read and evaluate manuscripts or other materials submitted for publication to ensure they are well written and logically structured
- Conduct research for, write, rewrite, edit, and proofread a variety of materials such as pamphlets, fliers, posters, presentations, conference materials, and other print and online content
- Design presentations and publications using software for layout, graphics, and photo manipulation
- Maintain organizing library and update content on organizing websites
- Coordinate with team, internal departments, and staff in the field to develop materials from research stage through final production
- Meet frequently with staff to discuss projects and resolve problems
- Confer with authors and team regarding changes in content, style, organization, or publication
- Check documents for accuracy (verify facts, dates, names, and titles using standard reference sources) and raise queries
- Determine potential copyright and permission issues and work to resolve them
- Review proofs and work with printers to resolve any concerns
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications and Skills:
- Bachelor's degree in related field and successful completion of writing, editing, and graphic design demonstration
- Minimum 5 years publishing experience
- Knowledge of editorial, production, and printing processes and procedures
- Background in graphic design a plus
- Previous organizing experience in labor and/or social justice campaigns preferred
- Basic understanding of labor relations and union issues
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, bilingual abilities (English/Spanish or French) preferred
- Ability to work effectively independently and within a team
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy
- Ability to adjust tone and arguments for a variety of audiences
- Ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks and projects
- Ability to contribute new ideas and incorporate feedback
- Ability to work with a diverse group of people
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Suite
