Lenox Hill Neighborhood House, widely recognized as one of New York's premier human services providers, is a 119-year-old settlement house that provides an extensive array of effective and integrated services--social, educational, legal, health, housing, mental health, nutritional and fitness--which significantly improve the lives of 20,000 people in need each year, ages 3 to 103, on the East Side of Manhattan. Our clients include older adults, homeless and formerly homeless adults, children and families, recent immigrants, disabled persons, adult learners and thousands more. We are seeking an Assistant Director for Volunteer Services to join our staff to help implement our vision for two wonderful senior centers: The Senior Center at Saint Peter's Church, located in the Citigroup Center on Lexington Avenue and 54 thstreet, and the Center @ Lenox Hill Neighborhood House, located at 70 thstreet and 1stAvenue, one of the City's first Innovative Senior Centers. Together, these two senior centers host an incredible array of expansive programming that is attracting over 500 seniors from diverse backgrounds and abilities (from the very active to the very frail) each day—365 days a year—8 a.m. to 8 p.m.—while providing a broad range of invaluable public health, case management, fitness and aquatics, health and wellness, arts and culture, education and socialization activities.
The Assistant Director for Volunteer Services will be a key member of the team and will divide his/ her time between both Senior Centers. Working closely with the Deputy Chief Program Officer and the Director of Volunteer Services, s/he will serve as the point person for all volunteers who work in both Centers. S/he will support volunteer instructors by: developing and maintaining a database of our over 200 active volunteers, maintaining and updating our Volunteer Manual, holding trainings in various areas of responsibility, and serving as the primary point of contact for all communication with our volunteers. The Assistant Director for Volunteer Services will also lead initiatives to recruit additional volunteers around specific initiatives, such as a Senior Volunteer Corps, which will provide peer volunteers to conduct errands and assist with light household chores. The Assistant Director for Volunteer Services will be expected to develop and carry out additional volunteer initiatives as well.
In addition to the oversight and coordination of volunteers, the Assistant Director for Volunteer Services will be part of the senior center management team and will help administer day-to-day operations of both senior centers and ensure they are conducted in accordance with our high performance standards and government regulations. On a daily basis, the Assistant Director for Volunteer Services may: identify new programming needs, reach out to partners and providers to develop new programs, complete reports to internal and external sources on program activities; work directly with clients, by providing information relating to health benefits, basic services (accessing MTA services, reduced utility charges) and economic needs (such as food stamps); link clients to key health and mental health provider partners. The Assistant Director for Volunteer Services will work closely with Lenox Hill Neighborhood House staff from a variety of departments and disciplines as well as staff from other local senior service providers in the community.
The Assistant Director must be adept at both identifying the member issues needing assistance and then connecting the member to the appropriate resources both within Lenox Hill Neighborhood House and in the broader community. The Neighborhood House has exemplary legal services, with expertise in housing issues, Medicare and Medicaid needs and Food Stamps. The Neighborhood House also operates an Economic Security Initiative, which is another resource for our members with economic needs. We also offer English for Speakers of Other Languages, as well as a growing roster of computer courses, all of which are available to Senior Center members.
The Assistant Director for Volunteer Services should have extraordinary interpersonal skills and should also be highly capable with administrative tasks. S/he should have experience working with older adults and be experienced with the needs that this population faces of a daily basis. S/he should have a combination of supervisory, managerial, administrative and direct service skills and a commitment to working with seniors to improve their quality of life. S/he must have great communication and teambuilding skills, a collaborative nature and experience in a not-for-profit setting preferred. Any candidate must be willing and able to work a nontraditional, flexible schedule, which will include weekends and some holidays. All candidates must have a Masters Degree in a relevant field (such as social work, public health, public administration) as well as applicable work experience.
