Position: Educational Specialist (Part-time, temporary)

Supervisor: Director of Early Head Start

Overview: University Settlement provides a comprehensive network of services to over 10,000 people of all ages lining in the Lower East Side. Its broad network of activities includes adult literacy classes, mental health counseling and intensive case management; group and family day care; support services to the formerly homeless; after-school and summer camp for children and teens; a senior center and a credit union.

The Zero to Three Child Development program integrates Early Head Start and Family Child Care services into a single program that offers full-day home-based child care services, family support services and advocacy to low income pregnant women and families with children less than three years of age. The program provides developmentally appropriate home-based child care, center-based socialization groups, home visits to families and family child care providers.

Responsibilities:

• Implement appropriate curriculum in home-based family day care programs by developing curriculum, teaching and modeling for providers how to plan and implement lessons so that issues such as mixed age groups, children with special needs, behavioral management are addressed. • Lead classroom group sessions. • Provide enhanced home visits to Family Day Care Providers serving Early Head Start children in home-based child care programs. • Provide on-site training to Family Day Care Providers addressing all areas of child development, curriculum planning, daily planning, space design, etc. • Track developmental screenings and coordinating special needs services including securing EI and CPSE services and special needs rate for providers. • Coordinate transition services for children entering preschool. • Coordinate special programming events. • Administer developmental assessments. • Handle classroom administrative tasks. • Maintain proper documentation on families and children (visits and child development experiences available to enrollees). • Assist in the recruitment of families for the program. • Assist during the Parent Council meetings and with other parent support groups. • Other duties as requested by supervisor to fulfill job responsibilities.

Qualifications: • Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education, Social Work, Human Development or related field with knowledge of child development (birth to three) with at least one year of classroom experience and/or curriculum development for infants and toddlers • Ability to work independently and collaboratively • Strong interest in interdisciplinary training, team building and family-centered prevention programs • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including strong organizational skills • Bilingual English/Spanish or English/Chinese strongly preferred

Hours: 17 hours per week. *Assignment is temporary and is expected to end one year from start date.

Salary: $17.00-$19.00 per hour
