Job description

Based in Washington, DC at the nation's largest civil rights organization working to achieve lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) equality, the SQL Developer will be an integral part of HRC's Database Team reporting directly to the Senior Database Administrator. The SQL Developer will spend the majority of their time developing clean, well-designed, well-documented and reusable SQL code that will follow HRC established norms and protocols.

Responsibilities:

  • Produce and provide timely and accurate data files and reports from the ROI Solutions Oracle-based membership database to HRC staff and vendors – including performing quality assurance testing before sending data files;
  • Follow established norms and protocol for querying and extracting data, including writing code that can be used by others on the Database Team;
  • Regularly upload campaign files into ROI, serving as a backup to the Senior Database Administrator;
  • Assist HRC staff with troubleshooting and developing systems to track and report on department-specific information (e.g. creating Access or other databases for HRC staff); and
  • Provide great customer service while maintaining top levels of technical proficiency.
  • Work closely with the Membership and Direct Response teams to help manage the process of selecting and extracting membership data for direct mail, telemarketing, online, and in-person fundraising and advocacy campaigns.
  • Gain an understanding of fundraising performance and characteristics of various donor audiences, communicate and collaborate effectively with colleagues, and develop queries and processes to ensure efficient and accurate data capture.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and abilities in the following areas: dynamic structured query language (SQL), complex queries, reporting capability creation, performance tuning, and data security practices and technologies;
  • Collaborate with the Membership Department to execute data extracts for various fundraising campaigns, sometimes requiring working with large and complex sets of data;
  • Follow HRC practices for writing code, and document all processes and procedures, saving final versions in an agreed-upon format;
  • Work with the Senior Database Administrator to fulfill list requests from departments across the organization, including closing trouble tickets recorded in FogBugz;
  • Work with HRC staff and external vendors to ensure the integrity of the membership database through data-cleansing and maintenance (NCOA Updates, duplicate record management, etc.);
  • Maintain, update, and support existing real-time reporting tools;
  • Work with the Senior Database Administrator to develop and update data specifications and delivery instructions for external vendors;
  • Provide data for basic membership reports and statistics for departments across the organization, as well as ad hoc analyses;
  • Coordinate activity with and serve as backup for the Senior Database Administrator.

Position Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or Computer Information Systems with two to four years of relevant work experience required.
  • Demonstrated ability to write effective and accurate SQL code from scratch, as well as work with existing code.
  • Experience working with a relational database a must; experience working with a membership database preferred.
  • Experience working in non-profit fundraising preferred.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, display high levels of personal motivation and desire to exceed expectations, while balancing the immediate needs of the organization.
  • Demonstrated ability to work well in a team environment, to handle multiple projects simultaneously and to manage work under tight deadlines while driving high levels of quality assurance a must.
  • Solid critical thinking and problem-solving skills along with a creative and curious nature.
  • Experience with spreadsheets and word processing programs required; experience with Access a plus.
  • Ability to quickly learn and adapt to new technologies as the need arises, showing an ability to be both resourceful and innovative.
