THE POSITION

NDRI seeks a senior level executive with the vision, leadership and management skills to take a cutting-edge research, training, and technical assistance organization to the next level of its growth by increasing its grant portfolio, its visibility to the public, and its fund development.

The Executive Director/CEO will report to the Board of Directors.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Serve as the chief executive officer and assume primary oversight responsibilities for administration, grants management, fiscal operations, personnel policies and procedures, facilities, management, and agency growth.
  • Manage the organization's budget in accordance with the budget approved by the Board.
  • Establish and maintain key relationships with other collaborating organizations and with potential federal, state and private funding entities.
  • Set the tone for collegial culture and mission and foster collaborative work within, and external to, the agency.
  • Serve as the external face of the organization exposing NDRI's accomplishments to a greater public thereby enhancing its reputation, increasing its visibility, attracting additional grants and contracts, and adding new senior research staff to the faculty.
  • Assure continued funding from current grants and contracts and proactively encourage the securing of new ones.
  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state and local legal requirements.
  • Lead fund-raising efforts and establish mechanisms for conducting fund-raising activities for the agency.
  • Establish and maintain a collaborative and supportive relationship with the Board.
  • Keep the Board advised of status of NDRI regarding grant and contract submissions, awards, future prospects, new directions, updated and accurate financial information, and any potential problems.
  • Establish and maintain key relationships with officials at Federal and State agencies, as well as with officials at private, grant-making foundations.
  • Oversee and review asset and revenue management and direct preparation of revenue forecasts to ensure smooth and efficient financial operations.
  • Oversee human resources and ensure that the agency maintains a supportive and positive relationship with staff while also meeting external mandates and requirements.
  • Oversee grants management to ensure the agency maintains positive relationships with key research staff as well as key grants management counterparts among our federal, state and private funders.
  • Provide oversight to agency infra-structure, specifically facility management and information technology, to ensure smooth and supportive functioning.
  • Engage the Board and staff in planning for financial stability and sustainability.
  • Overall, ensure the agency maintains its excellent reputation for outstanding quality with regard to all research, training and technical assistance activities.

QUALIFICATIONS

Professional
  • Degree in Public Health, Health Administration, Social Work, Social or Behavioral Sciences or related field; advanced degree an asset.
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience managing a broad span of administrative responsibilities at the executive level; experience in the non-profit sector preferred,
  • Awareness of the research being conducted in the fields of behavioral health (substance use/abuse and mental health), health care reform, recovery, infectious diseases, minority health disparities and other public health problems.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and engage effectively with staff at all levels, the Board of Directors, and external constituencies.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, with the skill to motivate, mentor and inspire others.
  • Strong business management skills including experience overseeing finance, human resources, and facilities related matters.
  • Familiarity with granting and contracting agencies; knowledge of financial statements, budgeting process and accounting procedures.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and complete multiple projects within required deadlines.
  • Experience with fund-raising highly desirable.
