Brooklyn Defender Services (BDS) is one of the largest public defense providers in the United States. BDS provides innovative, multi-disciplinary, and client-centered criminal, family, and immigration defense, as well as civil legal services, social work support and advocacy, for tens of thousands of clients in Brooklyn every year. BDS represents clients who have diverse, complex and multi-faceted needs in a high volume and very fast-paced setting.
The Family Defense Practice represents indigent parents accused of abusing and neglecting their children in King County Family Court. Our cases involve families struggling with homelessness, domestic violence, substance abuse, and mental illness. Interdisciplinary teams of attorneys, social workers and parent advocates advocate for clients' due process rights in family court and help low income families outside of court get the benefits and services they need to stay together.
Brooklyn Defender Services seeks a highly motivated and energetic litigation support assistant who works well with colleagues, can multi-task and is comfortable in a very fast-paced environment. The position will provide a wide range of litigation support to attorneys. The specific duties of the position will vary depending on experience and interest and needs of the administrative team, including obtaining needed medical and school records for court cases, drafting and following up on subpoenas, writing letters to clients, calling clients and service providers, coordinating attorney contact with incarcerated clientstracking court orders, managing data and reports, conducting conflict checks on our Case Management System, coordinating intake schedules, and updating calendars. This position will be part of the administrative team and will report to the Director of Administration.
A college degree is required. Successful candidates will have excellent computer, administrative, and organizational skills, including strong knowledge of Word, Outlook, and Excel. Candidates should also have excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to multi-task and work as part of a team. Prior office experience, preferably in a law office, is preferred. Bilingual ability in English and Spanish preferred.
