INVESTIGATIVE RESEARCHER

PRIMARY FUNCTION:

Conduct research, investigate, and monitor various types of extremists and domestic terrorists in the American Midwest; maintain relationships with and conduct training for law enforcement and other groups; support regional offices by providing information, training, guidance, and assistance; recommend strategies for responding to such activities; and write reports for public distribution and analyses for internal use on extremist activities. Located in Chicago, Illinois, and supervised by Director of Investigative Research, located in National Office.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Investigate extremist groups through the Internet, primary and secondary public sources, liaison with law enforcement and other relevant persons, observing extremist events, and reading extremist-related publications and documents.
  • Support regional offices on extremist-related issues by providing information, training, guidance, and assistance. Serve as a resource for national and regional staff engaged in investigative work.
  • Maintain and establish relationships with law enforcement officials and others with a professional interest in extremists.
  • Draft and edit memoranda for agency use; write and edit reports and articles for public distribution.
  • Recommend agency strategies to senior staff for responding to extremist groups.
  • Represent ADL and give speeches/training about extremist activities and the agency's response to them at meetings sponsored by the agency, law enforcement agencies, and selected other audiences, including working with Development staff to brief selected donor audiences.
  • Manage clerical and administrative aspects of investigative research office.
  • Maintain contact with lay leaders to provide them with information on fact finding activities and to obtain volunteer assistance.
  • Exercise discretion over investigative research expenses. Determine problem solving activities within the confines of agency protocols.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Political Science, History, Criminal Justice, or related field.
  • Graduate or Law degree preferred.
  • Five years' investigative exp. as journalist, law enforcement officer, in academic research or other professional background related to extremism.
  • Strong public speaking, analytical, and writing skills.
  • Internet research expertise important.
  • Ability to solve problems within constraints of carefully-defined protocols.
  • Good organizational skills.
  • Additional hours occasionally needed to keep up with heavy workload and attend special events.
  • Travel required; 10% overnight travel required.
