San Francisco Waldorf High School Chair

Summary

Working closely with the College of Teachers, Pedagogical Leadership Group, High School Steering Committee, Head of Administration, and other mandated groups or individuals, the High School Chair leads and collaborates with students, parents, faculty, and staff to address general high school issues in order to facilitate the best outcomes. The Chair often publically represents the high school in promoting the school's mission and fostering strong community relations. S/he is a member of the College of Teachers and Pedagogical Leadership Group, and is an ex officio member of the Board of Trustees.

The HS Chair's essential responsibilities fall into three areas:

  • Faculty/pedagogical leadership and support
  • Administrative leadership and oversight
  • Parent/community relations

Faculty/Pedagogical Leadership and Support

  • With the HS Steering Committee or other mandate groups, leads and manages curriculum development, faculty hiring, evaluation, substitution and professional development
  • Works with faculty and staff to address, manage and resolve specific curricular and faculty issues, and/or delegates issues to appropriate decision-making individuals or groups
  • Attends meetings of the College of Teachers, Administrative Committee, High School Faculty, and Full Faculty
  • With the Pedagogical Leadership Group, sets the High School Steering Committee agendas
  • Chairs the High School Steering Committee meetings
  • Consults with High School Faculty Chair regarding full high school faculty meeting agendas
  • Works with the Student Mentor and faculty to address relevant health issues of faculty, staff and students
  • Assists Registrar, College Counselor and staff in coordinating student services
  • Attends parent/teacher meetings as needed
  • Mentors, visits or evaluates faculty as needed – leads the Professional Development Committee of the HS
  • May teach high school courses (not to exceed 20% FTE)
  • With the HS Administrative Coordinator, manages any summer programs at the HS

Administrative Oversight

  • Along with Registrar and HS Steering Committee, helps form and manages the yearly/daily/weekly HS schedule, as well as student and faculty schedules
  • Supervises the HS Administrative Coordinator, Registrar, and College Counselor
  • Attends weekly HS staff Meetings
  • Oversees Educational Support, International and other HS programs
  • With the HOA, oversees HS athletics program and strategizes on HS enrollment
  • With the HOA and Director of Finance, is responsible for and manages the overall HS budget (in collaboration with individual HS budget managers)

Parent/Community Relations

  • With the HS Administrative Coordinator and staff, leads, coordinates and supports general communication with parents and students
  • Along with the HOA, is the "face" of the high school, representing and promoting the best of Waldorf education and SFWHS's mission, to parents, students, and community members
  • Hears and responds to individual parent concerns, helping to manage faculty and staff responses as appropriate and necessary
  • Works with Parent Council to facilitate parent engagement

Preferred Qualifications

  • Significant experience in teaching and/or administration in a Waldorf school
  • Tactful, effective and comprehensive leadership skills, comfort and facility working in collaborative groups, with the ability to orchestrate timely and appropriate outcomes
  • Strong communication skills, speaking and writing
  • Strong facility with digital communication tools
  • Understanding of and ability to manage school budgeting and personnel
  • Understanding of and appreciation for collaborative leadership

Compensation

  • This is a full time position, with the opportunity to teach up to .20 FTE
  • Relevant years of experience will be added to base salary, plus 5% administrative supplement
  • Comparable with other SFWS positions, includes generous tuition remission, health care, life insurance, and retirement plan benefits
  • 6 weeks paid vacation during the calendar year (administrative)
