NEW YORK NEW JERSEY REGIONAL JOINT BOARD UNION ORGANIZER

The New York New Jersey Regional Joint Board, Workers United a/w SEIU is a strong, progressive union dedicated to organizing in order to fight an unequal economic system. The Joint Board represents members in retail and manufacturing. We are currently looking for Spanish-speaking organizers based in New York City or New Jersey.

This organizer will use a variety of skills to develop and implement strategic campaigns related to the union's organizing goals. The overall work consists of the development and execution of plans as they relate to strategic organizing goals. The organizer will work with workers and community allies to develop and sustain campaigns that will help build the union.

Candidates who have a passion for justice, a willingness to learn, solid communication skills, a strong work ethic, an ability to work long and irregular hours, and the drive to make a significant and measurable impact on the world are encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities

Organizers are responsible for building capacity to support all stages of organizing. This includes, but is not limited to building a base of workers dedicated to organizing, organizing worker committees, and motivating workers during contract campaigns. The organizer will be able to identify and support campaign opportunities and develop appropriate strategy and materials to help win.

Duties vary by campaign, and may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Recruit and develop workers to effectively participate in organizing drives
  • Build and maintain worker committees dedicated to organizing
  • Design and coordinate public actions in support of organizing
  • Build relationships with workers through home and site visits
  • Run worker meetings
  • Develop campaign materials
  • Develop and execute organizing work plans that reflect campaign objectives along with other organizers and leadership
  • Build and maintain relationships with community allies and other relevant parties
  • Work with existing membership to support ongoing organizing campaigns
  • Develop and disseminating campaign materials

Job Qualifications:

  • Fluency in Spanish
  • Commitment to social and economic justice
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Basic computer skills, familiarity with database and spreadsheet applications including Access and Excel
  • The ability to manage challenging relationships
  • Strong facilitation skills
  • Eagerness to take on leadership roles and increasing responsibility
  • Can build consensus amongst diverse groups with varying interests
  • Ability to work well under tight deadlines and in a team environment
  • The ability to quickly learn new skills and adapt to changing campaign requirements
  • Strong interpersonal skills and an ability to work independently
  • High comfort level talking to people of diverse backgrounds
  • Enthusiastic commitment to strengthening the labor movement

Experience

  • Two years experience in related work strongly preferred
  • Experience leading staff preferred
