Curriculum Design Fellow

Too often high school teacher preparation lacks the content for meaningful teacher development; however, Relay Graduate School of Education (Relay GSE) is changing the status quo. We seek to build a team of current and former secondary teachers, instructional coaches, deans, and/or leaders to serve as Curriculum Design Fellows. These individuals will help us build fully-online, content-rich high school teacher preparation curricula in Biology, Calculus, Chemistry, Earth and Space Science, English Language Arts, Mathematics, Physics, and Social Studies. Curriculum Design Fellows will attend a two-week design lab where they will create high school content modules, Relay GSE's curricular units. These modules will teach graduate students the raw content, and also how to analyze classroom resources, intentionally plan lessons, and construct meaningful assessments. These content modules will guide new high school teachers toward making meaningful academic gains with their students. In addition to creating path-breaking curricula, serving as a Curriculum Design Fellow stands to be an incredibly enriching professional experience.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Fully commit to working in residence at one, 2-week design lab during summer 2013:
  • First design lab: Sunday, June 16 – Friday, June 28, 2013
  • Second design lab: Sunday, July 14 – Friday, July 26, 2013
  • Design at least one, five-hour, fully-online module for your identified content and pedagogy at the design lab, which includes the following deliverables:
    • One module plan (using a Relay GSE template), which outlines the curricular unit at a high level;
    • All online session plans with scripts (using Relay GSE templates); and
    • All supporting documents for online sessions (e.g. unit plans, lesson plans, student handouts, PowerPoint presentations, etc. aligned to Common Core State Standards, if applicable)
    • Sometime between the end of one's in-residence experience and Sept. 1, 2013, deliver a second module (with corresponding module plan, session plans, and supporting documents)
    • Draft, revise, and finalize all curricular materials based on feedback from reviewer
    • Select relevant video footage for use within the module
    • Collaborate with relevant parties (e.g., Relay GSE's Video and Technology teams) to design, script, and record audio supported with images and relevant video footage
    • Review the curriculum you create on Relay GSE's online learning platform
    • Engage in regular review conversations with colleagues
    • Complete initial training and onboarding through the Relay GSE Curriculum Design Team

OPTIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Invite a Relay GSE videographer to film your classes throughout the academic year if relevant to your design

QUALIFICATIONS

First and foremost, a Curriculum Design Fellow must share the Curriculum Design Team's sense of urgency about the need to improve student achievement through phenomenal teacher training.

Additionally, candidates for the position must have the following:

• Master's degree in subject he/she teaches (highly preferred)
• At least three years of teaching experience (in same subject area, highly preferred)
• Knowledge of backward planning using the Understanding By Design framework for unit planning
• Ability to design high-quality assessments
• Enjoyment of highly iterative work
• Proficiency in and access to Microsoft Word and PowerPoint
• Incredibly high attention to detail
• A demonstrated track record of student achievement
• Ability to work efficiently, intensely, and collaboratively for consecutive hours
• Openness to feedback, and professional growth and development

Relay GSE offers a competitive salary based on the number of modules successfully delivered. To degree that you're inspired and motivated to design additional modules, assuming capacity and expertise, it's possible you'll be invited to design more modules for further compensation.
