Summary Description

The overall goal of this position is to provide vital program support for the youth advocacy program at the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids (TFK). This position is based in Washington, DC and will report to the Associate Director of Youth Advocacy.

Primary Duties

  • Provide technical assistance to youth advocates and coordinators, and support them throughout the year.
  • Help manage the Youth Advocates of the Year Awards (YAYA) program and subsequent YAYA engagement.
  • Assist with promotion of the YAYA program and recruit applicants.
  • Lead monthly YAYA conference call trainings and webinars; develop resources for training calls.
  • Participate in the phone interview process and the judging dinner for YAYA selection process.
  • Help manage youth advocates at TFK events/trainings.
  • Serve as a TFK liaison with partner groups that have youth advocacy programs (Legacy etc.) and with state based youth advocacy programs in collaboration with the State Team and Federal Team.
  • Work with youth advocacy staff at Legacy to plan and execute the Youth Engagement Alliance (YEA) for Tobacco Control network both online, by phone and through in-person trainings.
  • Manage youth advocacy social media portals, including Facebook, Twitter and the YEA group site.
  • Help manage the Kick Butts Day (KBD) program including material development, website maintenance, grant reporting and promotion.
  • Assist with mini-grant process.
  • Serve as a liaison between the KBD Media Team, State Team and Federal Team and key event organizers and state youth program managers to cultivate strategic advocacy focused KBD events.
  • Develop KBD activities for the website throughout the year. Produce KBD activity guides.
  • Develop and send KBD email alerts.
  • Work with communications department to maintain and update the KBD website.
  • Work with communications department on Facebook and Google ads with specific targeting to appropriate KBD audiences.
  • Maintain KBD Facebook, Twitter and Flickr accounts.
  • Manage outreach to national and state partners to help promote KBD. Create new partnerships with national organizations to promote KBD.
  • Attend KBD meetings.
  • Act as a leader in tobacco control youth advocacy.
  • Help to plan a symposium for 50 youth. Responsibilities include (and are not limited to) working with the housing vendor; developing content for the agenda; supervising youth during their stay in Washington, D.C; conducting follow-up with youth post-symposium.
  • As needed, make presentations and conduct youth advocacy workshops and training sessions on behalf of TFK for youth advocates and advisors across the country.
  • Help to compile and distribute Youth Advocacy updates to TFK staff, youth advocates and their advisors.
  • Collaborate with other departments to find ways to involve youth advocates in TFK's local, state, national, international and tribal advocacy activities.
  • Organize the training and action at an annual shareholders meeting, recruiting participants, working with partner organizations to plan an activism event and a hands-on training for youth around the tobacco industry.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Assist with digital grassroots program, as requested by grassroots director
    • Foster ongoing relationships with TFK partners in accordance with events and special projects, particularly Kick Butts Day.
  • Work collaboratively with other departments on special projects as assigned.

Requirements

  • Excellent communications skills – writing, public speaking and interpersonal.
  • Ability to operate independently within a team environment and with only general supervision.
  • Ability to juggle multiple projects with varied deadlines.
  • Sound organizational skills and detail-orientation.
  • Ability to remain flexible and modify priorities as needed.
  • Significant experience with Microsoft Office, and social networking tools.
  • Commitment to the issue of tobacco control.
  • Excellent creative thinking skills.
  • Bachelor's degree in communications, political science, or related field.
  • 1-2 years of professional experience doing similar types of work.
