Job description

The YWCA National Capital Area is dedicated to eliminating racism, empowering women and promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all. Position Summary:

The Part-Time Tutor is responsible for working one-on-one or in small groups with adult learners on one or more specific areas of need: Math, Science, Reading Comprehension, Writing, Social Studies, and/or Computer Literacy. He or she will also be required to substitute for and assist with classes on an as-needed basis. The hours vary but this position must commit to a minimum of 12 hours/week.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Meet with assigned student(s) on a regular, weekly or more-than-weekly basis.
  • Coordinate with other instructors and tutors to develop effective and targeted learning plans for each student, using curricula that incorporates, "authentic" real-life contexts that are responsive to the needs, goals, and interests of adult students in their roles as workers, family members, members of the community, and lifelong learners.
  • Effectively integrate the CASAS and GED competencies, student goals and objectives into lesson plans.
  • Utilize curricula that reflect the diverse educational, cultural, and linguistic backgrounds of the students served.
  • Utilize a variety of tools and technology (e.g. audio-visual, computers, video, etc.) to support classroom instruction and learning.
  • Assess the students' learning style and learning needs through observation and/or assessment. Alert Education Specialist if student needs to undergo a more formal diagnosis procedure.
  • Incorporate tutoring and teaching methods that include interactive activities to address the learner's specific learning preferences (e.g. visual, aural, tactile, kinesthetic, etc.)
  • Submit comprehensive reports to the Manager of Adult Literacy Programs after each tutoring session.
  • Substitute-teach classes on an on-call basis, and coordinate with instructors before and after each class.
  • Assist with classroom instruction and lesson planning on an as-needed basis.
  • Work as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Meet with supervisor on a regular basis and productively participate in supervision.
  • Attend all mandatory trainings, meetings, and conferences required by all contracting agencies and YWCA/NCA.
  • Contribute to a positive work environment by effectively communicating with co-workers, supervisors and administrators in regards to any issue of concern relevant to job responsibilities and the agency.
  • Maintain professional relationships with students, relevant community agencies, facility management, and community members.
  • Understand and apply state and federal confidentiality regulations with regard to client records, interaction, and correspondence.
  • Perform all other duties as required by supervisor and/or management team.

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in education or related field with at least two years' experience in the instruction or tutoring of high school students or adult learners in a non-traditional educational setting.
  • Previous experience working with adult learners and the GED in particular is preferred, but not required.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; strong leadership abilities; organized; patient.
  • Ability to keep all participant data confidential.
  • Punctual and demonstrate dependable and consistent attendance according to work schedule.
  • Able to work independently when required.
