iMentor builds mentoring relationships that empower students in low-income communities to graduate high school, succeed in college, and achieve their ambitions. Students work with their mentors one-on-one, in-person and online, to develop strong personal relationships, nurture a college aspiration, navigate the college application process, and build critical skills that lead to college success. In New York City, iMentor partners with public schools to ensure every student in the schools receives a mentor. iMentor also provides its curriculum, technology, and best practices to help nonprofits run effective programs in the iMentor model. Since 1999, iMentor has connected 11,000 students with mentors. This year, iMentor is serving 2,400 mentor-mentee pairs in New York City and 2,000 more nationwide. iMentor has been recognized through funding by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Lumina Foundation, the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation, and the Robin Hood Foundation, and is a subgrantee of the federal Social Innovation Fund.

Position Overview

iMentor is seeking a strategic, results-focused leader to serve as its next Managing Director of Talent (MDT). Reporting to the COO and as a member of the Senior Leadership Team, the MDT will lead all aspects of talent strategy, including, talent acquisition, performance, and retention. The MDT will serve as an advisor to staff across the organization and will provide insight and guidance on key strategic decisions for the organization.

iMentor is embarking on a strategic plan to ensure continued growth in quality and impact of its programs by growing the New York program, expanding iMentor Interactive, and replicating the iMentor model to three cities. Over the next 5 years, iMentor estimates our team will grow from 85 to 180 staff and will open three new offices across the country. Building on iMentor's history of investing in talent, the MDT will make sure iMentor has the human capacity to achieve these goals and will be responsible for evolving iMentor's talent management strategy and systems to drive performance and retention for the organization during and after this period of growth.


Responsibilities

Talent Strategy and Management

  • Oversee all recruiting and hiring to meet iMentor's human capital needs, ensuring iMentor implements effective recruiting strategies to develop a pipeline of diverse and high caliber talent across the organization
  • Set standards for new staff onboarding and hold managers accountable to effectively onboarding their teams
  • Implement robust performance management strategy and tools to ensure that goals are aligned organizationally, staff are clear about what is expected, and managers are prepared to effectively assess and address performance
  • Develop and implement succession planning to identify and develop high potential staff for future roles within the organization
  • Create tools and strategies to identify needs and give staff access to professional development resources
  • Partner with managers to make sure they have the skills, training, and knowledge to effectively lead and develop their teams
  • Monitor staff satisfaction and retention, identify and get agreement on issues to address, drive initiatives to ensure that iMentor continually strives to be an even better place to work, with high quality of life for employees
  • Drive an inclusive organizational culture that values diversity and exemplifies iMentor's core values
  • Consult with Director of Operations and COO on human resources related policy, compliance and other issues
  • Lead team of three Talent Managers to achieve annual talent goals
  • Support iMentor organization-wide initiatives, requiring occasional evening and/or weekend events

Organizational Leadership

  • Create, refine and implement comprehensive talent strategy to position iMentor's programs for success
  • Identify talent implications of key program changes and organizational growth and evolve talent processes
  • Serve as a strategic advisor, content expert, thought partner, and coach regarding key management and people issues to staff across the organization
  • Participate on iMentor Senior Leadership Team as the senior-most talent expert in the organization
  • Model management and leadership practices expected of all iMentor staff, effectively managing the Talent team and serving as a coach and advisor to other managers

Qualifications

  • At least 10 years of successful recruiting, talent development, project management, and team management experience, preferably in a fast-paced and high-growth nonprofit, consulting, and/or entrepreneurial environment with a preference for candidates with experience working with multi-site organizations
  • Ability to both design high-level strategy and effectively implement tactics
  • Skilled at leading change with a proven ability to develop a vision and inspire and influence others to achieve shared goals
  • Proven success recruiting from their networks and others' networks
  • Excellent communication and listening skills, including the ability to communicate with professionalism and empathy, using the technique and message most appropriate to the situation and person
  • Experience working on building organizational culture, including diversity/inclusion initiatives
  • Natural ambassador for iMentor's staff, programs and culture; able to both embody iMentor's values and to excite people about the possibility of joining the iMentor team
  • Resourceful, results-oriented, team player with a customer service orientation, positive "can do" attitude and a sense of humor
  • Flexible and adaptable; open to feedback, professional growth, learning, and improvement
  • A sincere and deep commitment to the belief that every child deserves a college education and that college closes the opportunity gap
  • Views differences between individuals (race, gender, age, cultural heritage, physical ability, education and lifestyle) as an asset and demonstrates an appreciation of diversity within iMentor
  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Employment is conditioned upon successful completion of a background check, including fingerprinting is conducted by the Division of Human Resources at the NYC Department of Education. Continued employment is contingent on successful completion of an annual rescreening.
