iMentor builds mentoring relationships that empower students in low-income communities to graduate high school, succeed in college, and achieve their ambitions. Students work with their mentors one-on-one, in-person and online, to develop strong personal relationships, nurture a college aspiration, navigate the college application process, and build critical skills that lead to college success. In New York City, iMentor partners with public schools to ensure every student in the schools receives a mentor. iMentor also provides its curriculum, technology, and best practices to help nonprofits run effective programs in the iMentor model. Since 1999, iMentor has connected 11,000 students with mentors. This year, iMentor is serving 2,400 mentor-mentee pairs in New York City and 2,000 more nationwide. iMentor has been recognized through funding by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Lumina Foundation, the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation, and the Robin Hood Foundation, and is a subgrantee of the federal Social Innovation Fund.

Position Overview

iMentor seeks highly qualified and motivated professionals with 1-3 years work experience and a passion for working with students to provide them with skills and resources that lead to college readiness and college success. This selective position will prepare the next generation of professionals to lead innovative solutions to build and run effective programming needed to close the achievement gap in the US.

Becoming a Program Coordinator (PC) at iMentor is a rigorous and demanding experience resulting in an unparalleled opportunity for personal and professional growth. PCs serve as the "face of iMentor" to teachers, mentors (adult volunteers), and mentees (underserved high school students) and gain insight into the rich diversity of NYC's economic and cultural communities. Each PC is responsible for facilitating high quality, high impact relationships between 100 mentor-mentee pairs and has the unique chance to follow and support their cohort of pairs for 3 to 4 years. PCs must be superb communicators and motivators and eager to work in a fast paced, innovative, and results-oriented organization.

Program Coordinators comprise a large team of new and recent college grads that implements high quality programming for more than 2,400 students across New York City. iMentor has a strong commitment to talent development, developing staff to be innovative and effective in their roles at iMentor and beyond. Through on-the-job experience, coupled with tailored training and career development opportunities, PCs will be exposed to the current theory and best practices in youth development and education, civic engagement and volunteerism, college counseling and social entrepreneurship. PCs also gain firsthand experience in the New York City public schools, one of the country's most innovative and challenging public school systems and will work with people from all corners of New York City committed to supporting our mentees.


Responsibilities

  • Facilitate high impact relationships between 100 mentee/mentor pairs, including monitoring participation; providing individualized attention; case management; proactively assisting relationships through regular communication, support, and advice; and identifying pairs who need additional support and implementing strategies to improve relationships
  • Lead weekly iMentor class for mentees at participating schools, including discussion of weekly curriculum
  • Lead orientations and trainings for teachers and mentees
  • Organize and staff multiple large scale and multi-faceted mentor-mentee events (i.e. career workshops, museum visits, end-of-year events), overseeing all logistics, content, and budgets, including evening and weekend commitments
  • Develop and manage relationships with teachers and administration
  • Track program participation, conduct pre-, mid-, and post-program evaluations
  • Support all aspects of program implementation and improvement and iMentor's overall mission


Qualifications

  • A sincere and deep commitment to the fundamental belief that every child deserves a college education and that college closes the opportunity gap and the desire to assume responsibility for the success of mentor-mentee pairs and partner sites
  • Demonstrated comfort and ability to work with and motivate a wide variety of people, including NYC high school students and professional adults, with a preference for candidates with experience in racially, ethnically, and socio-economically diverse urban and/or recent immigrant communities
  • Demonstrated success motivating individuals, organizing communities and/or facilitating relationships
  • Ability to communicate with professionalism, assertiveness, and empathy to large groups and individuals verbally and in writing
  • Proven organization and time management skills to complete a high volume of varied responsibilities in a fast paced setting
  • Excellent strategic problem-solving ability with a positive, "can do" attitude
  • Flexible and adaptable, open to change, learning, and improvement, team-player with a sense of humor
  • Able to travel throughout New York City and to staff mentor-mentee events from 6-8 pm on any weeknight and 1-4 pm on some Saturdays
  • One or more years of work experience, preferably in youth development, volunteer or program management, and/or education
  • Bilingual skills, particularly Spanish and/or Chinese, a plus
  • Views differences between individuals (race, gender, age, cultural heritage, physical ability, education and lifestyle) as an asset and demonstrates an appreciation of the diversity within iMentor
  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Employment is contingent upon the completion of a satisfactory fingerprinting and criminal background check, conducted by the Division of Human Resources at the New York City Department of Education

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary: $35,000-$40,000 annually, commensurate with experience
  • 90% employer funded comprehensive medical and dental coverage
  • 18 days paid annual vacation and 13 paid holidays + most iMentor functions closed between Christmas and New Year's Day
