The Sackler Institute for Nutrition Science at the New York Academy of Sciences (the SacklerInstitute/ the Academy) was created by a founding gift from The Mortimer D. Sackler Foundation, Inc. to spearhead a global effort to systematically and comprehensively address the critical global crisis in malnutrition. The Sackler Institute has collaborated with the World Health Organization to launch an initiative to develop a global agenda for nutrition science research. Additionally, it also houses a public-private partnership of academic institutions, non-profit organizations, government bodies, and corporations that will work together to galvanize action on the nutrition science research agenda and implement outcomes in the field. The Sackler Institute will also stimulate research by issuing research grants and prizes to a worldwide network of researchers who will generate innovative solutions to critical nutrition issues. The Sackler Institute generates a coordinated network across sectors, disciplines, and geographies that promotes open communication; encourages exchange of information and resources; nurtures the next generation of scientists; and affects community intervention and public policy changes.

The New York Academy of Sciences is an independent, not-for-profit organization committed to advancing science, technology, and society worldwide since 1817. With 25,000 members in 140 countries, the Academy has one of the world's most elite networks of experts and partner organizations – 27 Nobel Prize winners and scores of academic and industry executives on its President's Council and Board of Governors as well as alliances with 40 universities and academic medical centers and scores more multinational companies and NGOs.

The Academy uses these networks to catalyze path-breaking initiatives for scientific, social and economic benefit. Its core mission is to advance scientific knowledge, positively impact the major global challenges of society with science-based solutions, and increase the number of scientifically informed individuals in society at large.

The Academy facilitates communications among scientists, physicians, students, educators, executives, policy makers, government officials and journalists from around the globe through its interdisciplinary conferences, meetings and diverse electronic and print publications. The Academy employs 80 professional and support staff, and has an annual operating budget of $15+ million.

JOB TITLE: Associate Director, The Sackler Institute for Nutrition Science

DEPARTMENT: The Sackler Institute for Nutrition Science

REPORTS TO: Executive Director, The Sackler Institute for Nutrition Science

SUMMARY: Working with the Executive Director of the Sackler Institute and other members of the Academy to support the activities of the Institute including working with experts, working groups and advisory councils, organizing scientific conferences, managing partnerships and publications.

PRIMARY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Oversee the day-to-day activities of the Sackler Institute for Nutrition Science, including working with experts, advisory councils, and working groups; network with stakeholders in the field, NGOs, and private industry; develop spreadsheets of milestones, and monitor and report on progress.
  • Manage and adhere to annual program budget. Author grants for program support from government agencies, private companies, medical education, foundations, and individuals. Prepare and negotiate budgets and Letters of Agreement with partners and grantors.
  • Develop and maintain budgets and discuss financial obligations with sponsors and partners. Write/manage grants and contracts, progress, follow-up reports, and budget reconciliations.
  • Manage multi-stakeholder partnerships, develop and implement a system for regular updates, active engagement and reporting
  • Create strategic alliances and nurture close ties with a network of leading organizations, researchers, and institutions in academia, government, and industry; collaborating with them to develop outcome-oriented and impactful programming focused on key scientific questions and critical issues.
  • With the Conferences team, manage the development of nutrition conferences from idea through to completion, including post-conference reports and educational dissemination materials.
  • Review applications for research grants and awards, coordinate the work of external review committees, and select individuals for Research Grants, Poster Presentations, Travel Fellowships, and Poster Prizes. Write and review reports for supporters.
  • Monitor and manage information, discussion and developments in the areas of nutrition science, scientific policy around nutrition, and food safety. Compile and analyze scientific data for presentations, reports and articles.
  • Work closely with and support the activities of the Academy staff including, but not limited to scientific programs and Annals.

REQUIREMENTS: Ph.D. in nutrition, global health, public health or related field and 3-5 years post-doctoral experience in an academic, research or a programmatic setting. Program, staff and administrative management experience is required. Excellent computer skills and familiarity with distance communication and learning tools (e.g. WebEx) required. Experience with research methodology and statistical packages, and evidence of scholarly activities such as peer-reviewed publications and scientific presentations is required. United States Federal or other successful grant writing and award management experience preferred. Must be able to travel 10-15% internationally as needed.

The successful candidate will be highly organized, with excellent communication/networking skills and have a demonstrated ability for a broad scientific perspective with the ability to work independently and as part of a team. Qualified candidates will bring demonstrable project management experience as well as evidence of success working in a complex, integrated organization across many programmatic and functional departments.
