Sponsors for Educational Opportunity (SEO) was founded in 1963 as one of the first nonprofit mentoring organizations for students of color in New York City. In 1980, SEO created the Career Program, which introduces the nation's most talented underrepresented undergraduates of color to summer internships in investment banking, sales & trading, investment research, asset management, corporate finance, accounting, transaction services, corporate law, information technology and nonprofit. Purpose
The Program Manager is responsible for the recruitment, evaluation, and support of SEO Career Program interns. The Program Manager serves as a liaison to partner companies and is responsible for the management of a program and projects as determined and supervised by the Managing Director and Director of the Career Program.
The ideal candidate will be a team player with a background in business/banking/finance who can take a leadership role in assigned areas and is skilled at interacting with various constituents.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
Summer
- Guide a cohort of interns through the internship experience to help them get a full-time offer (in Banking or Finance)
- Maintain dialogue with partner companies to get feedback on intern performance
- Attend seminars and participate in summer professionalism training events
- Help interns prepare questions for seminars
- Speak to each intern in cohort at least once per week to drive accountability
Fall
- Help summer interns transition to campus (including job search and recruiting responsibilities)
- Recruit intern candidates (includes extensive travel)
- Host program-specific recruiting/enrichment events (e.g. Finance 101) and attend selected conferences
- Evaluate prospects, review applications and interview candidates
Winter
- Evaluate prospects, review applications and interview candidates
- Debrief summer results with partner companies and adjust job descriptions/expectations for the following summer
- Make selection recommendations – communicate with management, other program managers and partner company representatives
Spring
- Complete the selection and placement of the intern class
- Develop rapport with selected interns, identify and address areas for development
- Design training curriculum and summer events
Standards/Expectations
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with all constituents: other employees, colleges & universities, partner companies, applicants, interns, SEO alumni
- Assist in the interviewing and evaluating of potential Career Program interns
- Counsel and provide feedback to assigned SEO interns from acceptance, through training and throughout the summer and beyond the conclusion of the program
- Analyze and report on outcomes related to recruiting, training and offer rates
- Identify and implement strategies to develop strong partner company relationships including programming
- Coordinate, develop, and implement Career Program activities, programming, special projects and assignments
- Model the values and principles that SEO expects of its interns and employees throughout the summer
Requirements
- Commitment to the mission of SEO
- Minimum of a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university
- Minimum of 2 years professional work experience in banking/business/finance/consulting
- Strong organizational skills, ability to multi-task, and handle changing priorities
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Experience with Excel
- Ability and desire to motivate college students to relate effectively within corporate cultures
- Ability to communicate effectively with students, colleagues, clients, alumni, and senior staff members
- Ability and willingness to travel, work some nights and some weekends as dictated by programming needs
