The Development Department of the National office in New York City is seeking applicants for a full-time Individual Giving Officer.

OVERVIEW

The ACLU is our nation's guardian of liberty. Combining litigation with public education, media outreach, advocacy, and lobbying, the ACLU works at the local, state, and federal levels to effect change in the courts and legislatures, as well as in the court of public opinion. The ACLU tackles a vast array of issues, including national security and human rights, free speech, reproductive freedom, women's rights, separation of church and state, racial justice, equality for LGBT people, voting rights, immigrants' rights, criminal justice reform, and ending the death penalty. The ACLU has participated in more cases at the U.S. Supreme Court than any other nongovernmental organization. Effective and efficient, the ACLU is in the 1 percent of charities receiving at least 9 consecutive 4-star ratings from Charity Navigator.

The national office of the ACLU has approximately 300 employees; including affiliates, the organization has more than 1,000 employees. The national Development Department raises approximately $70 million annually in private support from major donors, foundations, and more than 500,000 members.

Reporting to the Director of Special Gifts, the Individual Giving Officer will create and implement a variety of individual giving programs targeted towards select donor groups to cultivate and steward increased giving.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Create and implement a hybrid direct marketing/individual giving program to successfully cultivate, solicit, upgrade and steward the ACLU's $5k-$25k giving capacity donors.
• Create and implement a concierge program for a select group of donors with personal ties to the organization but with limited giving capacity.
• Develop a cultivation, solicitation, upgrade and stewardship plan for family foundations with giving capacity of up to $25k.
• In coordination with the Annual Fund Officer, implement cultivation, solicitation and stewardship program for the Crystal Eastman Leadership Society (CELS), the ACLU's mid-level donor recognition society. Responsibilities include but are not limited to the welcome series, renewal and upgrade efforts, donor recognition program, cultivation and stewardship efforts, and creation and distribution of all CELS collateral materials for affiliate offices.
• Coordinate plans for the above-mentioned donor groups across units within Development and between National and Affiliate offices.
• Serve as the National office primary contact for these donor groups.
• Launch and oversee the outsourced "thank you call" program for the donor groups and a select group of other ACLU donors.
• Manage budgets and expenses for projects related to the donor groups.
• Manage acknowledgement program for the donor groups to ensure that acknowledgements are not only accurate and timely, but that they advance the donor cultivation/stewardship cycle.
• Ensure that all information related to these donor groups is properly recorded in the shared nationwide database.
• Serve as liaison with Stewardship Officers in Planned Giving and Leadership Gifts departments as well as affiliate offices and Donor Communications to ensure that all stewardship efforts for the donor groups are coordinated, complementary and cost efficient.
• Assist the Special Gifts department with other duties as assigned.

EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor's degree in marketing, or a related field.
• Minimum of 4 years of fundraising experience in a non-profit environment, ideally at an organization with a complexity and scale comparable to that of the ACLU.
• Experience managing day-to-day responsibilities of direct marketing and/or individual giving program aimed at $5k+ donors.

• Experience creating proposals for and working directly with family foundations.

• Ability to represent the organization to donors and to interface with all levels of staff at the national office and affiliates while maintaining tact and diplomacy. Confidentiality is essential.
• Excellent organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects; superior attention to detail with strong follow through.
• Initiative, self-motivation and ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Computer proficiency, including experience with donor databases (PIDI a plus)
• Commitment to the mission and goals of the ACLU.
