The Academy facilitates communications among scientists, physicians, students, educators, executives, policy makers, government officials and journalists from around the globe through its interdisciplinary conferences, meetings and diverse electronic and print publications. The Academy employs 75 professional and support staff, and has an annual operating budget of $15+ million.

JOB TITLE: Associate Director/Director, Science Alliance

DEPARTMENT: Education and Public Programs

REPORTS TO: Executive Director, Education and Public Programs

SUMMARY:

Provide strategic and operational oversight of programs and services that serve the career advancement related needs of graduate students and post-docs. Oversee the conceptualization, development, and implementation of events and online resources that provide networking, and educational opportunities for young scientists. Working closely with other departments at the Academy, help raise support and publicize events and programs. Build and manage relationships with academic partners and stakeholders.

PRIMARY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

Events and Programming

  • Conceptualize, develop, implement, and promote programs and events on career issues for grad students and postdocs, taking advantage of the Academy's unique resource as an institution at the intersection of academe, business, and government, with its enormous convening and dissemination power.
  • Provide opportunities for career education and networking locally, state-wide, nationally and internationally.
  • Serve as senior personnel on a National Science Foundation Grant to promote Science Alliance across New York State and provide services to graduate students and postdocs in remote locations
  • Conceive and implement special projects with a wide variety of stakeholders and across departments at the Academy

Relationship Management

  • Utilizing the existing Science Alliance Committee to liaise with faculty, administrators, students and postdocs at area universities,develop programs and resources with appropriate format and content that will be of value and interest to the Science Alliance community.
  • Working with the Membership Department, ensure contract obligations are met to acquire new members from partner universities, maintain databases of campus contacts at Alliance institutions and Alliance members, and facilitate the negotiation of new contracts. Convene and lead stakeholder/steering committee meetings.

Publicize Science Alliance and Serve as Expert in the Field

  • Publicize Science Alliance through individual career talks, conference presentations, journal articles, and social media
  • Participate in new initiatives of the Academy, including planning and execution of career mentoring events outside of the New York City area. This will likely require some travel time.
  • Take steps to promote membership, SA events and other Academy events within the SA community through social media and other online channels to increase participation and awareness.
  • Represent the Alliance/Academy at career fairs, conferences, scientific meetings, and other large gatherings of scientists and educators, and be able to speak on a selection of career development topics for Science Alliance "Around Town" campus engagements.
  • Working with the Academy Marketing and Program Departments, develop strategies for outreach to the SA community.
  • Working with the Academy's Web Team, develop content for the Science Alliance web portal and other relevant channels.
  • Oversee monthly (or bi-monthly) e-mails to Alliance members as well as respond to e-mail feedback from Alliance members.

Departmental Management

  • Working with the Development Staff, help in identifying prospective funders (foundations, agencies, corporate sponsors, etc).
  • Develop grant proposals, create special events, and meet with relevant individuals as necessary.
  • Prepare budget for SA activities and manage expenses.
  • In collaboration with the Meeting & Event Operations Department, organize support and logistics for Alliance programs (room location, catering, A/V, etc.).
  • Oversee Science Alliance-related activities of a part-time program coordinator and affiliated contractors.
  • Participate in a strategic planning process with the Education and Public Programs team

REQUIREMENTS: Ph.D. in the sciences with knowledge of career development with 1 - 2 years experience in program management. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to multi-task, work creatively and independently as well as function in a team environment. Must be available for periodic travel.
