DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATE – Special Events

Celebrating our 31st anniversary, the Northwest Burn Foundation is a widely regarded 501(c)3 nonprofit organization serving burn injury survivors and their families in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana and Alaska.

We are seeking an experienced Development Associate who possesses the leadership attributes and entrepreneurial spirit necessary to lead our special events fundraising initiatives. This opportunity requires expertise in long-lead planning, the ongoing evaluation of existing events, and identifying new opportunities that will further advance the Foundation's mission and financial objectives.

The Northwest Burn Foundation creates meaningful change for burn injury survivors through financial and in-kind support for our programs from individual donors, local and national charitable and family foundations, and through corporate giving. Funding organizations like Boeing, Microsoft, Liberty and JP Morgan Chase have not only lent their financial resources to the Northwest Burn Foundation but have also leveraged their pool of talented employees to help strengthen our organization. In order to expand the financial support the Northwest Burn Foundation receives from corporate and foundation partners, we are hiring a talented Development Associate to proactively lead and expand corporate and foundation partnerships in order to help us achieve its program impact and growth goals in the 5-states we serve.

OUR HISTORY & MISSION Founded in 1982 by Dr. David Heimbach, former Director of the University of Washington Burn Center; Janet Marvin R.N., former Associate Director of the University of Washington Burn Center; Frank Hanson, former Chief of the Seattle Fire Department; and Tom Stelleck, a Bellevue area business professional, the mission of the Northwest Burn Foundation is to prevent burns and to improve the quality of life for burn injury survivors through programs, education and research.

POSITION OVERVIEW Are you a person who enjoys event planning and implementation, proactive corporate solicitation and inspiring our event volunteers to reach for the stars? Are you self-motivated and directed, capable of creating a strategy to meet aggressive revenue goals, able to lead others, and manage competing tasks and deadlines?

Reporting to the Executive Director, the experienced Development Associate - Special Events is responsible for the revenue generation, leadership, and continuous growth of four annual signature fundraising events: Annual Gala, Golf Classic, Summer White Party, and Stache' the Boot.

SIGNIFICANT RESPONSIBILITIES

CORPORATE & FOUNDATION SPONSORSHIPS * Develop a Corporate and Foundation-based Revenue Generation Strategy: Support the Development Team in creating strategies to identify and secure corporate and foundation partnerships. Implement this income strategy by developing target lists of new and renewing corporate and foundation donors and packaging Northwest Burn Foundation programs with accompanying solicitation requests to appropriately appeal to donors. Develop effective solicitation plans of action, and the necessary supporting materials. Investigate the marketing and business needs of corporations in order to successfully develop and implement a strategic revenue generation strategy that addresses these needs. Annually achieve $250K in sponsorship fundraising for all four (4) events.

  • Secure Resources from Corporations and Foundations: Identify and engage senior leadership/program officers from corporations and foundations to invest in the Northwest Burn Foundation both financially and through in-kind donations via: the fundraising gala, programmatic support, and/or other initiatives.
  • Event Sponsor Program: Ensure each of the Northwest Burn Foundation's signature events has corporate and/or foundation sponsors at varying levels of financial support.
  • Maintain and Steward Corporate and Foundation Relationships: Nurture partnerships with current and prospective funders, including Event Sponsors and Program Sponsors through donor recognition programs and stewardship, including written correspondence and telephone communication. Cultivate long-term relationships to ensure continued funding and involvement.

VOLUNTEER ENGAGEMENT Develop and execute strategies for recruiting, supporting and engaging volunteers. Specific duties include:

  • Forge partnerships with companies to provide opportunities for senior leaders and high potential managers.
  • Position the Foundation to successfully develop and implement volunteer programs that engage people with technology skills, arts management backgrounds, and other skills as required to meet the strategic needs of the organization.

LEADERSHIP * As a Foundation team member, the Development Associate – Special Events will be involved in business, strategic and communications planning, and other internal development initiatives. The Development Associate – Special Events will support the Executive Director and the Board of Directors to develop and steward the overall culture and vision of the Foundation.

  • As we look to fill this role, this opportunity requires someone who thrives on challenges, is a team player, works well under pressure, is a good public speaker, extremely self-motivated, incredibly organized, and an expert multi-tasker.
  • This position plays an important role in fostering donor and corporate sponsor relationships through strong interpersonal skills, presence, and the ability to effectively build positive relationships both internally and externally.
  • Ability to annually achieve $250K in sponsorship fundraising.
  • Financial responsibilities including budget development, revenue and expense management.
  • Event management, including planning to day-of execution, and post-event wrap-up.
  • Write powerful and inspiring corporate sponsorship proposals to current and potential funders.
  • Ensure that all sponsorship agreements are fulfilled.
  • Must be able to produce/oversee the production of all creative materials related to special events, including guest list, invitations, catalogues and program booklets, etc.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.

REPORTING STRUCTURE * Executive Director with monthly reporting, and event/program budget creation in the annual revenue budget process starting August 1, 2013.

SUPERVISOR CAPACITY * Volunteers, unpaid interns and/or support staff assigned to assist with special events and community outreach initiatives.

QUALIFICATIONS * Annually achieve $250K in sponsorship fundraising.

  • Proven strategies in recruiting, motivating and working with a diverse volunteer base.
  • Strong and efficient use of all Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) Greater Giving, Constant Contact, Donor Perfect, and In Design. We do not have a MAC environment.
  • Minimum 5 years professional experience in a for-and/or nonprofit management role.
  • Strategic thinker with experience in corporate and foundation sponsorship, event program management, and volunteer engagement.
  • Passionate business professional possessing a sense of humor, unlimited energy and enthusiasm, and an outstanding work ethic.
  • Self-motivated and driven to exceed project goals.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team while balancing multiple projects and prioritize multiple tasks and manage multiple priorities.
  • Strong persuasive and inspiring writing skills. Ability to write in-depth proposals and reports.
  • Strong verbal communications skills. Ability to deliver inspiring and succinct sales presentations and close the deal.
  • Impeccable attention to detail.
  • BA/BS required, MBA/MPA in nonprofit leadership preferred.
  • Knowledge of the Pacific Northwest business and social community. (Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana & Alaska)
  • Ability to travel upwards to one full week at a time.

HOURS 7am to 3pm, Monday to Thursday are our operation hours. This is a 32 hour per week benefited position. During peak event times, this position entails work on evenings, weekends and holidays with employee expected to work in excess of 40 hours per week. We do not offer the ability to work remotely or from home.

REVIEWS Upon completion of 6-month probation period: annual formal review, periodic/informal reviews and "check ins" as needed or requested by either party.

COMPENSATION / BENEFITS Salary is negotiable depending on experience, commensurate with company salary structure and will be discussed with the final three candidates being considered for this career opportunity. Medical benefits through Regence after 6-months, paid holidays and vacation, and incentives from Costco and Key Bank. Our office is located in the heart of Ballard and we provide free parking, and a professional and entrepreneurial work environment.

This position requires reliable transportation and proof of Washington insurance and the satisfactory outcome from criminal background verification prior to hire. This position does not offer relocation assistance.
