Overview of Teach Plus and the T3 Initiative

The mission of Teach Plus is to improve the achievement of urban children by ensuring that a greater proportion of students have access to excellent, experienced teachers. Half of new teachers leave urban classrooms within three years, just as they are beginning to have the strongest impact on student learning. We give effective teachers a reason to stay. Teach Plus runs three programs designed to place teacher leaders at the center of reform. These programs include: the Teaching Policy Fellows Program, the T+ Network, and T3: Turnaround Teacher Teams.

The T3 Initiative is a partnership between Teach Plus and local districts to recruit, develop, and support effective, experienced teachers to serve in the lowest performing schools. This program was designed by teachers to address the problem of inequitable access to effective teachers in the highest need schools.

Research shows that nothing is more important for a student's success in school that the teacher in front of that child's classroom, yet the students who need effective, experienced teachers the most are the least likely to be assigned to them. T3 Teacher Leaders are selected through a rigorous selection process, and placed in teams that make up 25% of the staff at the partner schools. T3 Teacher Leaders hold full-time classroom teaching responsibilities as well as leadership roles in their schools. The T3 Initiative launched in Boston in 2010. We currently partner with public schools in Boston, Fall River and Holyoke, MA as well as Indianapolis, IN and Washington, DC.

Title: Director of T3 Implementation

The Director of T3 Implementation will report to and work with the National Director of Teacher Leader Development and will be responsible for the implementation quality of the T3 programs in all of our current cities. The Director of T3 Implementation will supervise Link Leadership Coaches (LLC's) and support the site based teams (Coaches) to insure that the T3 program in each of our schools have the context, systems and personnel for success.

The Director of T3 Implementation will be responsible for the following activities:

Oversee the Quality of School Based Implementation

  • Work with the National Director of Teacher Leader Development and the Vice President of T3 to finalize the metrics that determine implementation success (including the use of getting to green, the data dashboard and any other useful implementation benchmarks)
  • Implement the program implementation evaluation system created above.
    • Manager of instructional teams, Link Leadership Coaches (projected 3 for FY14-15) and Coaches (projected 8 for FY14-15).
    • Working with LLC's and school principals to outline the framework for strong teacher leadership positions and responsibilities in each school.
    • Oversee (participate when needed) the process of coach and principal check-ins. Insure this relationship is appropriately structured and productive.
    • Facilitate the sharing of strategies and lessons learned across partner schools.
      • Create a transition process (from start-up team) and onboarding process for new schools. Identify the best ways for new teams to understand learned best practices from other sites.

Data

  • Collaborate with the T3 Program Director to oversee the gathering and tracking of interim, formative and summative assessments data from partner schools.
    • Working with outside evaluator to gather data on the impact of the T3 Initiative in the partner schools and track fidelity of implementation in each partner school

Capacity Development

  • Collaborate with National Director of Teacher Leader Development (NDTLD) to improve the instructional coaching skills of the LLC's.
    • Collaborate with the Director of Professional Learning (DPL) to identify and highlight the learning needs of the Coaches and Teacher Leaders.
    • Collaborate with the NDTLD and the DPL to create the scope and outcomes for Principal support and training.
    • Supervise the quality of Link sessions (developed and lead by LLC's). Insure that stated learning outcomes are reached by Link participants.

Systems Development & Program Management

  • Develop an infrastructure that insures the T3 LLC's and school-based coaches have consistent, supported and doable roles.
    • Refine, design and supervise the policies that guide the work and collaboration of Teacher Leaders and Coaches across the sites.
    • Collaborate with Development team to support the need for school based "examples of learning and success" that will live in grant applications.
    • Think broadly about how T3 implementation learning can affect policy at a broader scale. Work with T3 senior policy team to craft strategies for turning T3 learning into high leverage policy.

This role will require travel and must be based in one of our current T3 regions: Boston, Indianapolis or Washington, DC. With this understanding, the assumption is that three days per month will be required to travel to the other partner regions. Some travel will also be required for national trainings.
